The journey of life is not about reaching a destination but, more about everything in between. This statement is very evident in the book One Amazing Thing by Chitra Divakaruni. Nine strangers are trapped in a visa office after an earthquake strikes but author never reveals the true ending of the story because the point of the book was focused on the journeys along the way, not about the ending. Instead, Chitra goes very in depth about a major part of each character’s life that reveals the experiences that formed them into the individuals they became. All of the people are headed to India for separate reasons but their stories all end up connecting in some way. More times than not, I have judged someone based on things I’ve heard from others or based on my observations of them without actually going out of my way to get to know them. Some of the the strongest relationships in my life are with people who I completely misjudged at first. A lot of my close friends have also admitted to me that they had a very different perception of me before they took the time to get to know me. These experiences have taught me to change my outlook on strangers. When someone acts a certain way, I always wonder about the major events in their life that have caused them to, perhaps, become a mysterious, angry, bubbly, or giving person. This book leads me to think about life mostly, because things can change in the blink of an eye. None of these people knew they would be stuck under a collapsed building. A loved one can be taken so quickly and time needs to be cherished. Also, the characters become selfless enough to pitch in any food they had and to offer comfort to one another.
