1. What is the significance of the title, Off the Veranda? (What does it mean?) Malinowski realized he wasn’t getting a full picture of native life from just interviewing the natives and not living with them. He wasn’t taking part in their daily lives. He realized he had to come down from the Veranda and actually go and live with the natives. 2. Where did Malinowski conduct research? The Island of Mailu, which was off the south coast of New Guinea, is where he did his early fieldwork. Then he went to the Trobriand Islands, which were off the eastern tip of New Guinea. In 1915 he took base in the most important village on the largest of the Trobriand Islands, the Omarakana village. 3. Explain Malinowski’s concept of functionalism
