Lennie obviously had some previous attachment to small animals, otherwise he wouldn’t have picked up a random dead mouse from the floor. Perhaps it was something to keep him distracted from reality; that he was naturally slow at thinking. The fact that Lennie is the brawn and George is the brains, makes them perfect friends. George and Lennie are like brothers. They need each other to survive. Lennie seems to suffer from a brain disease as his mind cannot grasp on to anything for too long. For this reason, George is fond of Lennie’s company and feeble-minded personality. The fact that George states that Lennie was a cousin to lie to Candy shows that they have a close relationship. If George were to detest Lennie like he claimed he did if he were his relative, he wouldn’t have resorted to slandering about his bloodline with Lennie. Colored people are often abused during the old times and Crooks’s sore spine represents the struggle and pain. George and Lennie’s similar views of their future makes them want to work to better achieve that goal. Their friendship is tied together by the belief that working hard together will eventually lead to their ultimate achievement. Curley’s wife attitude towards Crooks and Candy shows her approach towards older men. She believes that since she is Curley’s wife, she has power to make the men instantly regret their decisions to talk back at her. This scene of intense arrogance foreshadows that her own words will be handed back to her. George’s responsibility is to keep Lennie under control. However it is clear when George is not around, Lennie is not able to control his actions nor emotions, making George a huge factor in his life.
