Obedience in Social Psychology Social psychology is the branch of study that deals with social interactions and the effects it has on the individual. This study ultimately looks into the cognitive functions that make an individual behave in one manner or another. Social Psychology is used to understand obedience as an individual based on the actions of others.
One of the most famous psychology experiments based around the concept of obedience was conducted in 1963 by Stanley Milgram (Mcleod, 2008). This experiment consisted of 40 males between the age of 20-50. Milgram followed through with this experiment to recognize the relationship between authority and obedience. There are four common ways to correct these behaviors. Encouraging others to interact and cooperate in different groups, is a great start. For instance, if one typically rules over one group of friends, encourage the leader to invite others into their group for games and activities. Encouraging cooperation within a big group is an extremely important life lesson that preschoolers should begin to learn at a young age. With a common goal in mind, with the goal being to get your preschoolers to socialized with the whole class and not just a few. In these stages, if a child is not encouraged to expand their horizons, they might become antisocial and have problems with group work and activities in the future. It is also extremely important to encourage individuality as well as equality amongst students. It is good to have the students interact one on one as well as in larger groups. Group work is an important part of life and being able to cooperate with groups in a behavioral manner is crucial. Cognitive retraining, or re-teaching the student basic individual functions may be an excessive step towards eliminating cliques, however, demonstrating how a child should act and interact with others may be necessary.
