Northeast Tribe Beliefs

Northeast Tribes Daily Practices The Iroquois people of the Northeast had many. . . interesting. . . culture traits. In the Iroquois marriage system, the husband had no authority over his wife. The furthest female ancestors, of course still living, were head of the home. They had all of their family and extended family living in the longhouse with them. The people living in the longhouse with the female head of the home were part of the woman’s clan, and no one in the same clan could marry. The Iroquois kept a pot of corn mash simmering over the fire all day, so people could help themselves when they were hungry. They mainly ate corn, beans, and squash, the “Three Sisters”, which were harvested unripe and combined to make a dish called succotash.
