When life becomes a question of survival, do rules in everyday life/ behavior seem to matter? Lies and deceit can show to be motive if or when life is threatened. Throughout this paper it will become apparent that when put into a certain position where there are decisions to be made, everyone might show another side of themselves that you may not have known to be there. Within the story, Night lies and deceit will prove to show not only character traits, but how they affect decisions that are made and how the overall ending is changed due to denial that comes along with it all.

Sighet is the hometown where Elie and his family had lived before they got sent off to Birkenau. This was the start of a vast change in what everyone thought was going to happen versus what actually happened. This was also the opening introduction of who all the characters were and we got to understand their personalities before their beliefs and motives were altered. After migrating to an unknown place, Elie and his father were separated by the rest of their family and forced to lose all contact with them. As they were going through the lines an inmate had told them a piece of information that at first they were hesitant to take, but decided it might be for their own good. With their lack of knowledge and uncertainty they felt it was in the best interest. As they were approaching the S.S. Guards the guy had said, “Your profession, Farmer” (Wiesel 31).Then he said to tell the Guards that they were 18 and 40. Coming up to the guards Elie had said he was 18 years of age. The importance of this quote lies between the fact they had in order to get through selection they had to meet the requirements. Not too old to hold out a job and become fatigued easily ...

It just will not work trying to help others and still help yourself. It has been shown that when in the heat of the moment, most will reveal sides of themselves that either oneself or others may not have even known to be there. Now, after realizing not only the physical, but emotional ties that came along with the Holocaust, do you think that it was right to come to an “every man for himself” type of survival or should have they stuck together. This leads to the other question of would there have been a different outcome if had done so? Lies and deceit has shown not only a change in people at this time, but how in the end decisions that were made because of the shift of the inmates had really instigated the situation versus helped.
