Niccolo Machiavelli was born on May 3.1469 in Florence, Italy. Niccolo was raised in a middle class family with a peaceful childhood getting a humanistic education. He spent two years studying business mathematics, and then worked seven years in Rome for a Florentine banker. In 1494 he returned to Florence, he witnessed the expulsion of the Medici family has ruled Florence for decades. In 1500 Machiavelli married Marietta Di Lodovico Corsini they had six children together. Three years later Pope Alexander VI became sick with malaria and died he was only in office less than a month. Julius II is an enemy of Borgia’s was elected Julius II later banished Borgia to Spain where he died in 1506. Machiavelli helped raise and train Florentine civil militia in order to reduce Florence’s dependence on mercenaries, later that year he served as Florentine diplomat to Pope Julius whose conduct as the “warrior pope” he observed firsthand. In 1512 the Medici family regained control of Florence and Machiavelli was dismissed from office. One year later he was wrongly accused of participating in a conspiracy to restore the republic he was held in jail for three weeks. After being in jail he left Florence for a quiet town called Sant’ Andrea where he decided to pursue a career in writing. The year of 1513 he began writing his Discourses on the First Ten Books of Titus Livius, a book that focused on states controlled by a politically active citizenry the book wasn’t finished till 1521 mainly because he got interrupted on Discourses to write The Prince. Keep faith at a minimum trust is good and well but can be broken over the smallest of greed. Bravery and strength is necessary for any great man. All of these characteristics will build a strong and amazing prince in the eyes of Niccolo Machiavelli.
After reading The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli I have really learned what it takes to become a prince and I learned what he went through in life. I learned so much back ground history on Niccolo that I never expected to learn this book is an awesome book. It’s very clear and to the point it’s easy to understand no hiccups while reading this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who would be interested. I wouldn’t have personal went and picked this book but I’m glad that I was told to read this book.
Niccolò Machiavelli was a man who lived during the fourteen and fifteen hundreds in Florence, Italy, and spent part of his life imprisoned after the Medici princes returned to power. He believed that he should express his feelings on how a prince should be through writing and became the author of “The Qualities of a Prince.” In his essay, he discusses many points on how a prince should act based on military matters, reputation, giving back to the people, punishment, and keeping promises. When writing his essay, he follows his points with examples to back up his beliefs. In summary, Machiavelli’s “The Qualities of a Prince,” provides us with what actions and behaviors that a prince should have in order to maintain power and respect.
Niccolò Machiavelli was known during much his life as a part of the republican government in Florence until 1512. At that time, the Medici family took over the city and ruled under a more monarchical system. From that point until his death in 1527, Machiavelli was always just on the outside of Florentine politics. He would occasionally get work from the Medici but his tasks were never as important as they had been under the republican government of the past. As he was trying to find his way back into a major role in Florentine government, Machiavelli wrote The Prince, a manual of sorts that explained how a monarch should rule his state and why. While Machiavelli had been a strong proponent of republican ideals in the past, in The Prince, his ideas are far from adhering to republicanism. The book seems to promote the ideal monarch as a cold, heartless person whose only goal in life should be to retain power, regardless of who or what he destroys. This includes killing enemies of the state, personal enemies of the Prince, and even, in some cases, friends or family. While The Prince was not the first book of this kind, it was the first to suggest a government that rules with no regard for religion or morality. Machiavelli did not particularly pay heed to religious law in the way he lived his life, but he also did not particularly care for the Catholic Church of the time because of the lack of morality demonstrated by the Pope's and other supposedly "religious men's" actions at the time. Although Machiavelli gives numerous points on what it takes to excel as a prince, he also shows some raw examples of how he feels a prince should act in order to achieve maximum supremacy. First, when he says, "ought to hold of little account a reputation for being mean, for it is one of those vices which will enable him to govern" proves Machiavelli feels mighty adamant about his view that being mean will help a prince achieve success (332). It is absurd to imagine the meanest prince as the most successful. Also, when Machiavelli states, "our experience has been that those princes who have done great things have held good faith of little account, and have known how to circumvent the intellect of men by craft" revealing his attitude to manipulate people into fearing and respecting the prince (335). Also, Machiavelli shows that for a prince to be successful, he must not think about good faith.
Niccoló Machiavelli claims in “The Qualities of the Prince” that a prince must have certain qualities that will allow him to seize and maintain his power as a ruler. Machiavelli asserts that these qualities will guarantee the ruler to be able to govern his subjects effectively. According to him, a prince must study the art of war, must understand generosity and to what extent he must be generous to be effective, must choose to either be loved or feared, and be able to keep his word to his citizens according to the situation. He uses examples to further express his views on the subject. The main purpose was to inform the reader how to effectively rule and be an acceptable Prince. Any ruler who wishes to keep absolute control of his principality must use not only wisdom and skill, but cunning and cruelness through fear rather than love. Through his many years of experience with Italian politics Machiavelli wrote “The Prince”; a how-to guide for new rulers. We are given descriptions of what a leader should do to effectively lead his country. A leader should be the only authority determining every aspect of the state and put in effect a policy to serve his best interests. These interests are gaining, maintaining, and expanding his political power. Machiavelli’s idea is that a ruler should use a variety of strategies (virtues) to secure his power. Machiavelli lists five virtues that a ruler should appear to have; being compassionate, trustworthy, generous, honest and religious.
