The day my worst fears came to life. I never thought I would live to see the day I couldn’t get back to my home within in a few days. August 27, 2005, was the last day that I would ever live in Louisiana again. Maria Nunez lived in Louisiana for more than forty years and have gone through some major hurricanes in her life. Nunez just arrived a few years earlier to New Orleans in 1965 when hurricane Betsy made landfall. That was her first major hurricane that she lived through, she stated “In my youth we treated it like a party for everyone to get together” We went in to the streets when the power went out. All of the neighbors came out and barbequed the food they had in their refrigerators’. That was in my youth and we had no fears then. The power came back on a few days after the storm pasted. People were helping each other out with food and water. They did not wait for the government to come and tell them what to do. The day August 29, 2005 Katrina made land fall was supposed to of been the day I had my pace maker surgical procedure. My daughter Mariella which was flying in took off from El Paso Texas at 07:00 am August 27, 2005, to come be by my side for my surgery. After thirteen hours on the road we just happy to have a safe place to stay. Once we unloaded all of our belongings from the cars to my cousin home. We ran to the stores to stock up on supplies for 14 people in one home. That took us a few hours to accomplish this because again everybody had the same idea. By 11.00am the mayor of New Orleans Ray Nagin ordered the mandatory evacuation of the city. We were all thankful we decided to leave the day before.
