My Portfolio Analysis

I am Brezana Cross, a graduating senior, Biology major at Spelman College. This SpEL.folio portfolio, my portfolio, demonstrates having successfully completed my Spelman College Core Curriculum Outcomes within the past four years of my education. I have submitted five artifacts ranging from short opinion essays, poems and even my research paper from my study abroad experience. I have chosen each of these unique documents to be a total reflection of my Spelman experience and to show how I have grown as a scholar. I hope that you as the reader will enjoy some of my best work and appreciate my expression of a liberal arts education as a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) major. Our newly inaugurated tenth president, Dr. Mary Schmidt Campbell, has encouraged that Arts be integrated into the conversations about how we think about traditional STEM. This integration of Arts in Science allows for the opening of new and innovative ideas that leads to discoveries in technology and also learning. That is why I particularly chose artifact number one. This short essay comes from my Introduction to Ethics course with a Spelman Alumna, Dr. Holman. This was one of my most favorably courses outside of my major and it challenged me to think outside of the box in almost every aspect of life. I was a student in this class in the fall of 2014, shortly after the death of Mike Brown. In this essay I had to compare and contrast the social events of the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham in the 1950s and the social events of the Black Lives Matter Movement in Ferguson during 2014. I was tasked to consider the attitudes, culture, militarization of the police force both then and now.
