My Neighborhood: Mis Barrios De El Paso

Mis barrios de El Paso y Ciudad Juárez I grew up in El Paso while going to visit family in Jáurez every weekend. Reflecting on both of the neighborhood I grew up in I now notice many differences between my grandmother’s neighborhood and the one my family lived in in America. The changes were really that of going from one country to another. My grandmother lived in a poor area, in El Paso we live in a middle class neighborhood. In Juárez, my grandmother lived on an interesting street that I absolutely loved. She lived right on the corner of her street. Her house (like many of the others in her neighborhood) were one story houses with no garages. They weren’t in the best condition as many had paint chipping off and trash was often on the floor outside these houses but I always felt safe there. Every time I would go outside and see another person they would greet me and some would even ask how my grandmother was doing. There was also at least one paletero man who would go by the house everyday. Across the street (the end of the street by my grandmother’s house is a T stop) there was a small convenience store. Going down the street (past my house) about two-thirds of the way is the middle school I attended, continuing to the very end is a high school that I almost went to (I went to high school in another part of town. As a consequence of living near so many schools you can see children ages 5 to 18 walking down the street in the mornings, afternoons and evenings going to or away from school. Usually most kids talk at a normal volume but some can be loud and is usually when you hear many dogs barking. Unfortunately, there has also been some vandalism in my neighborhood especially near the schools. We have also had our car broken into and some of our neighbors have had their cars damaged. I also know of an instance in which one neighbor broke into another’s house and stole some
