The two passages that inspired me this unit was My Forbidden Face by Latifa and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. In both stories, the characters recall adolescence their rites of passage. In My Forbidden Face, Latifa is living a normal life. She is like any other teenage girl across the globe. Then, the Taliban arrives in town and her world becomes a reoccurring nightmare. Latifa fears that her life before the Taliban will be a memory of the past. So when Narguesse removed her chadri it was a curve ball for Latifa. Latifa and the other women in the crowd were faced with the decision of standing up for what they believe in no matter the outcome. Latifa could let fear stop her or let faith drive her.
