Cold Water by Major Lazer This year, 2016, Major Lazer and Justin Bieber made a new release named “Cold Water”; probably one of their best hits yet. “Cold Water” is from the album Music Is the Weapon. “Cold Water” addresses that in breakups or that breaking point where it is almost to the end of the relationship, you don’t give up no matter what. For Justin Bieber, he can relate to this song because of his breakup with Selena Gomez, he didn’t give up after what happened. They released this song in the perfect generation when people don’t know what love is. The genres of Major Lazer are mostly American electronic. It was launched in 2008 as the digital dancehall project (Hoffman, Ross). The artist that are in Major Lazer are Diplo, Jillionaire, and Walshy Fire. First debut album was Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do. Right off the bat Major Lazer hit it off with this first album. Like the rest of the music, it has connected to the listeners and showed a story that everyone could relate to. In 2012, Snoop Dogg joined Diplo for the single La La La, relaeased under the name Snoop Lion (Hoffman, Ross). After Snoop Dogg, Diplo moved on with producer Jillionaire and joined the group for Freee the Universe. At this point in time, Major Lazer wasn’t that popular. Major Lazer is EDM music and there isn’t a lot of people that listen to EDM music except for teens. Once Major Lazer moved to produce music with big named people than they became more popular. Like in 2013, Major Lazer release featured Bruno Mars and Shaggy. One year later, Sean Paul and Pharrell Williams joined for Apocalypse Soon, which was Major Lazer’s first release to include Wakshy Fire (Hoffman, Ross). Year after year, Major Lazer has got even more popular. In 2015, Major Lazer’s album Peace Is the Mission featured the hit Lean On with Ariana Grande, Ellie Goulding, and 2 Chainz. This verse of the song is referring that she doesn’t want to have the feelings of isolation. She is in danger of falling out and is asking for help because she wants to survive even though she is all aloe. “I just want to stay afloat/I’m all alone/And I hope, I hope someone’s gonna take me home/Somewhere I can rest my soul/I need to know you won’t let go” (). MØ is saying that she wants him to stay and rescue her from her situation so she feels safe.
