Cold Water by Major Lazer This year, 2016, Major Lazer and Justin Bieber made a new release named “Cold Water”; probably one of their best hits yet. “Cold Water” is from the album Music Is the Weapon. “Cold Water” addresses that in breakups or that breaking point where it is almost to the end of the relationship, you don’t give up no matter what. For Justin Bieber, he can relate to this song because of his breakup with Selena Gomez, he didn’t give up after what happened. They released this song in the perfect generation when people don’t know what love is. The genres of Major Lazer are mostly American electronic. It was launched in 2008 as the digital dancehall project (Hoffman, Ross). The artist that are in Major Lazer are Diplo, Jillionaire, and Walshy Fire. First debut album was Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do. Right off the bat Major Lazer hit it off with this first album. Like the rest of the music, it has connected to the listeners and showed a story that everyone could relate to. In 2012, Snoop Dogg joined Diplo for the single La La La, relaeased under the name Snoop Lion (Hoffman, Ross). After Snoop Dogg, Diplo moved on with producer Jillionaire and joined the group for Freee the Universe. At this point in time, Major Lazer wasn’t that popular. Major Lazer is EDM music and there isn’t a lot of people that listen to EDM music except for teens. Once Major Lazer moved to produce music with big named people than they became more popular. Like in 2013, Major Lazer release featured Bruno Mars and Shaggy. One year later, Sean Paul and Pharrell Williams joined for Apocalypse Soon, which was Major Lazer’s first release to include Wakshy Fire (Hoffman, Ross). MØ takes the place of the person being saved. MØ starts to sing, “Come on, come on/Save me from my rocking boat” (). This verse of the song is referring that she doesn’t want to have the feelings of isolation. She is in danger of falling out and is asking for help because she wants to survive even though she is all aloe. “I just want to stay afloat/I’m all alone/And I hope, I hope someone’s gonna take me home/Somewhere I can rest my soul/I need to know you won’t let go” (). MØ is saying that she wants him to stay and rescue her from her situation so she feels safe. She now starts to fight, with scenes showing her reacting to the lover’s text with someone else, with her also tearing down the painting that she drew of him, etc. One of the main parts of the video - lyrically and musically, comes at the bridge. She declares a straight message - “boys only want love if it’s torture, don’t say I didn’t warn you” Again she does a great job in playing the double role - of being the lead telling the audience and viewers a message and warning to the boys and girls - that guys only want love if it’s full of hardships and fighting from the girl and from the relationship itself. Recently, rap has surpassed many genres of music. In the year 2017, eight of the 10 most listened to artists were rap artists. Artists like Lil Uzi Vert, Future, and Cardi B have many songs listed as the top 10 best selling tracks. What do all these rap artists have in common? They have the the three keys that make up the structure of a great rap album.
In the early 1980s, the "new wave" movement, a sub genre of punk rock that began in the '70s, was generating a more sophisticated pop sound. In Britain, artists including bands such as the Clash, Squeeze, and the Police attained both critical and commercial acceptance. The Pretenders, another British band established in the late 70s, was led by an American-born singer and songwriter, Chrissie Hynde. In the United States, the Los Angeles-based band X navigated the transition from punk to new wave, and the New York-based group Talking Heads with a big assist from MTV, succeeded in fusing art rock with funk and African rhythms. Which leads me to my next new 80's genre.
The man feels abandoned in a corner and he drinks for the sadness he feels. While drinking, he tells himself I do not understand why you left me, if I know she loved me, so if you ever regret your decision he will be waiting for you. Basically, the man feels broken emotionally because the women he loved, left him for no reason. This song to me is not a dancing song, however the song is more about remembering your ex-wife, ex-girlfriend or ex husband and ex-boyfriend. For me personally, this song reminds me of drinking, the title literally means bitter shots of liquor. The way the song shares the hurt the man feels by the women that left him. I could almost picture a man sitting at a bar drinking to his ex saying, “I’m drinking because of you, you caused this”. CSNY is profoundly successful in conveying their message in the song by using the right lyrics and vocals accompanied by the tune of the guitars. “Helplessly Hoping” can be interpreted in so many ways that in either way it, nonetheless, will insinuate on the same thing, which is love. As they put it love is not lying, and it will always be around. Listening to the song can put one in an emotional roller-coaster that its theme can be known beforehand. This perplexed relationship describes the essence of love, and its implications. It reflects on how love can be capricious, which gives a sense of mystery. The harmony of the group in the song makes it one of my favorites, and puts it in my top list of love songs in all times.

In the song “I’ll Show You” Bieber talks about how “life’s not easy,” when he was continuously getting into trouble with the law, and his ex Selena Gomez. He then goes on to talk about how “[he is only] human.” Bieber feels that in a relationship his partners “want [him] to be perfect,” and he cannot be perfect because he is only a human, and humans make mistakes. The song “Sorry” indicates that Justin just wants “one more shot at forgiveness” and how she should let him “redeem [himself].”

Proceeding the release of Kanye’s album College Dropout, more rappers strayed away from the standard influence of gangster rap and moved towards rapping about anything and everything that could define their individuality as artists. At the same time, the rise of streaming platforms available today made it easier for fans to discover emerging voices and new tracks, thus reinforcing this new wave of rap music. According to statistics, “listening in the genre increased 74% on Spotify in 2017, and Drake, the Weeknd and Kendrick Lamar were three of the platform’s top five most popular” artists. As we move more mainstream, the preference for music that is more centralized around a partying type of lifestyle increases.
