Muscular Injuries are common and with proper knowledge can be easily treated or prevented. There are three types of muscular injuries; strains, sprains and contusions. They are the most common reason for inactive games in the NFL, but you don’t have to be in the NFL to “pull” a muscle. Muscular injuries are common to all people whether the activity be athletic or simply recreational. A strain is injury to muscles or tendons. Tendons are cords of fiber that connect muscles to bones. The most common place for strains to occur is in the leg, foot, or back. Strains are commonly caused by training and technique errors. Usually strains are found with those who have had technical errors during excersize. For example, you may strain your glutes by squatting improperly. Technical injuries can be avoided by proper technique and posture. A training error is simply the overuse and stress over time on a specific muscle. If your were to continuely stress a specific muscle for physically to long, you could easily be effected by a muscle strain. The area of the pain the athlete will automatically force their hand to go will be along the line of the ligament of their knee. Within a few minutes of the sprain or tear, swelling will start to form around the knee area. This will cause suspicion that there is a knee injury and will help athletic trainers or doctors on the scene examining the athlete in discomfort. If the athlete tries to immediately move after the injury occurs they will be limping to help prevent the physical pain which is upon them. There are three grades of a medial collateral sprain. If the injury is evaluated as a grade one sprain then the athlete will feel a little bit of tenderness on the medial side of the knee along the ligament that is injured. In grade one sprains there is little to no swelling because it is not a high impact sprain. When an athlete’s knee is bent at a thirty-degree angle and force is being applied from the outward part of the knee to the inner part there will be pain but there is little no joint laxity. Only ten percent of the fibers in the MCL ligament are torn do to the injury. Grade two sprains will have notable tenderness in the same location as the tenderness in grade one sprains. What they do when they pull you out is what can make or break a career or life. This is what happened to me last summer during my MMA training. I got caught with a right hook from one of the best in the gym. I went down for a few seconds but stood up and tried to continue the fight. My coach made the best decision that night and made me sit out for the rest of practice and I was lucky he did. By the time I returned home I had the worst head pains I have ever had and I still get weird headaches to this day. Imagine if my coach had put me back in that night, I could have received long term(other than headaches) injuries. Coaches and staff should keep kids out of play even if the injury isn't 'serious' enough. It is not a matter of whether not I can tough it out or get over it, teen athletes need time to heal to fully recover from big hits.

Initially as an expression of strength, to competition and functional training, weightlifting has carved its path through the ages. It has taken on a new role in the modern world; athletic training. With an entirely new emphasis in sports on speed, strength, and flexibility; weightlifting is more popular than ever. Unfortunately, young athletes often do more harm than good by injuring themselves lifting. When these uneducated lifters try to jump right into a program, lifting more than they should, an injury is imminent. What is overlooked, is that when weightlifting is done correctly, it has a great potential to prevent injuries instead of cause them. Understanding how the body works, using proper technique on the appropriate lifts, and participating in regular physical activity can greatly reduce the risk of athletic injuries.
