James Dashner’s The Maze Runner tells the story of Thomas, a teenage boy that has no recollection of his life. Thomas finds himself in a giant maze filled with other teenagers who remember nothing about themselves other than their names. Throughout the novel, Thomas befriends the people who live in the Maze and becomes a part of their society. Thomas and most of his friends escape the Maze at the end of the novel, returning to the real world. This novel is the first book of a trilogy, so it does not have closure. However, the novel ends giving a shed of hope to the characters.
The main character in the novel is Thomas. He begins the novel knowing practically nothing about himself, so he creates his own personality throughout the story. Quickly, Thomas discovers that he values friendship and doesn’t leave a friend behind. He reveals his loyalty when he runs from the Glade, the town in the Maze, to protect his friend Alby.
