Gandhi Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2,1869. He was born in Porbandar, Kathiawar India. Gandhi died on January 30,1948. Gandhi was important because he was one of the first people to use the principle of non-violence. Gandhi's teachings influenced many famous people around the world. Some examples are: Martin Luther King,Nelson Mandela, Albert Einstein, and John Lennon. As a child Gandhi was an average student. Gandhi was married at the age of thirteen because of a prearranged marriage. He had five children, but the first one died after a few days of being born. He left India to become a lawyer. Gandhi then got invited to South Africa from a businessman. Gandhi’s luck their was no good either.European racism came to him,after he got kicked off of a train,because he was “colored” and was holding a first class ticket.When Gandhi fought back because of it,was arrested and was sent to jail.After this, he became know as as a leader.Gandhi returned to India in 1896,and he was disgusted by it.British wanted them to wear their clothes,copy their manners,accept their standards of beauty,but Gandhi refused.Gandhi wanted people to live free of all class and wealth.Gandhi tried so hard and was more successful then any other man in India.They won independence in 1947. Gandhi’s non-violent movement worked because,Gandhi used clever planning, mass appeal, conviction, and compassion to win independence for India.

Gandhi was very religious even when he was little his brothers tried to make him eat meat (it wasn’t bad to eat meat in Hinduism when you are little), but he refused (“Mohandas Gandhi”). Gandhi respected his religion and was a respectful towards others.
What is Gandhian philosophy? It is the religious and social ideas adopted and developed by Gandhi, first during his period in South Africa from 1893 to 1914, and later of course in India. These ideas have been further developed by later "Gandhians", most notably, in India, Vinoba Bhave and Jayaprakash Narayan. Outside of India some of the work of, for example, Martin Luther King Jr. can also be viewed in this light. Understanding the universe to be an organic whole, the philosophy exists on several planes - the spiritual or religious, moral, political, economic, social, individual and collective. The spiritual or religious element, and God, is at its core. Human nature is regarded as fundamentally virtuous. All individuals are believed to be capable of high moral development, and of reform.

He started in South Africa trying to help. Mr.Khan, a friend of Gandhi’s was a successful Muslim trader but the South Africans see him as simply an Indian. Hearing this surprised Gandhi because he is a well-educated lawyer and like the other Indian men he was speaking to, they are still considered inferior and not allowed to walk with whit e men in the street. Gandhi received his law degree in England yet the British discriminate against him in South Africa and he thought this treatment was unjust. Mr.Khan agreed to join him in protest against Indian discrimination and encourage people to burn their passes they have to carry. The British beat or arrested anyone who tried to join him in going against the government but he pass laws were eventually changed. After Africa he travels to India. His wife Ba usually does what he asks of her but when Gandhi tells her to clean the latrine she says no because that is a job for untouchables. At this time there was still a rigid caste system that Gandhi was trying to eliminate. He wanted equality for everyone. Ba agreed to follow him and stay by his side through his journey. His whole plan was to protest Britain through Ahimsa or nonviolence. His first major campaign was the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1922. His father’s name was Karamchand Gandhi and his mother’s name was Putlibai. He was the youngest in the family of one sister and three brothers. Both his parents were deeply religious and frequently visited temples and took their meals only after daily prayers. In school Gandhi was a mediocre student who was quite an introvert. He was even afraid to talk to any student in the class as he thought that they would poke fun at him. However, he always upheld his honesty and truthfulness. He believed in respecting his elders and was always ‘blind to the faults of the elders’. Gandhi was married in 1882 at the age of thirteen to a girl named Kasturbai. He passed his matriculation exams in 1887 and then soon returned to Porbander as he found the studies of his college very tough. Then later on he went on to the University of London in England to pursue the study of law after a lot of opposition from his mother and some other people .He vowed not to touch woman, wine and meat. He passed the London matriculation exam in the second attempt. At last he sailed back to India in June, 1891.later on, he went to Bombay to study Indian Laws. In spite of getting a case, he went to South Africa in April 1983. Gandhi sailed for South Africa in April 1893 and reached Natal at the close of May. It was in South Africa that Gandhi had a lot of experience in laws, handling cases and many other fields. He observed the pitiful conditions of the Indians and other colored people and also experienced it when on his way to Pretoria from Natal, he was thrown out of a train because he was the only colored person in the first class compartment. During this time Gandhi became deeply interested in religion. In spite of his Christian friends’ tries of converting him to Christianity, he kept his faith. He helped the Indentured Indian laborers and fought for their rights. After three years in South Africa, Gandhi returned to India in 1896. Gandhi had a lot of shortcomings in his personal life. He was a very suspicious husband and kept an eye on all the movements of his wife, Kasturbai.
