The speech I found most compelling was “On the Death of M.L.K”. I find this so because of the central idea found throughout the speech which is “ Even with a major death like M.L.K we must not hate but band together as a nation and love one another.” The first and biggest main idea I found was “Violence should be overcome by compassion and love.” This main idea beneficial to the central idea because this it is similar to the central idea. I found this true due to these quotes “...replace that violence that stain of bloodshed that has spread across our land, with an effort to understand with compassion and love.” And “...what we need in the United States is not violence and lawlessness, but is love, and wisdom, and compassion toward one …show more content…

I found these quotes that go along with this main idea.”So I ask you tonight to return home, to say a prayer for the family of Martin Luther King -- yeah, it's true -- but more importantly to say a prayer for our own country, which all of us love -- a prayer for understanding and that compassion of which I spoke.” Also “Or we can make an effort, as Martin Luther King did, to understand, and to comprehend, and replace that violence, that stain of bloodshed that has spread across our land, with an effort to understand, compassion, and love.” The rhetorical devices used were pathos and logos. The effect pathos has on the speech is when stating that even in death MLK wouldn’t want violence he is getting at people’s emotional side. Logos is used only in the form of when stating that in death MLK wouldn’t want violence he is assuming that people are familiar with MLK and his teachings that violence is not the answer to problems including a tragic death. This quote supports my claim “We can move in that direction as a country, in greater polarization -- black people amongst blacks, and white amongst whites, filled with hatred toward one another.
