What if you turned into a bug or killed your master? Unfortunately, Gregor has turned into a bug and Balram has killed his master. Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka and White Tiger by Aravind Adiga both share literary devices that makes the novels memorable from the twentieth century. Kafka and Adiga both use a somewhat similar plot revolving around the idea of Marxism, characterization of the main character, and conflict internally and externally in each novel. One main theme seen in the plot of Metamorphosis and The White Tiger is Marxism. The internal conflict that Gregor experiences is his conflict with losing his humanity. In Metamorphosis, Gregor wishes that his furniture would be removed from his room. But he also argues with himself about why he could possibly want the furniture to be gone. Here, the internal conflict of his bug instincts are fighting with his human instincts. “Upon hearing the mother’s words, Gregor realized that the lack of any direct human exchange, coupled with the monotony of the family’s life, must have confused his mind; he could not otherwise explain to himself how he could have seriously wished to have his room cleared out. Did he really wish his warm room, comfortably furnished with old family heirlooms, to be transformed into a lair in which he would certainly be able to crawl freely in any direction, but at the price of rapidly and completely forgetting his human past?” (Kafka, 31). Gregor also faces an external conflict with his father. His father cannot accept that Gregor has become a bug, and doesn’t treat him as his son. One example of this conflict is illustrated when Gregor’s father throws apples at Gregor after Gregor had left his room. “Gregor drew his head back from the door and raised it toward the father.
