My understanding of the Mental Health Peer Program and how it serves students is that the program is setup to have available peers ready to help other students cope with and seek the help they deserve through one on one conversations, workshops, and other resources, for stress, mental health, and other related topics they may need guidance and management for. In addition the Mental Health Program also aims to educate people on mental health and to assist in destigmatizing mental health problems. The way the program serves students is not only through having available office hours, but also by having accessible resources and taught skills that students can take out with them and use. I was a soccer coach for both mainstream soccer and for a soccer program built for those with disabilities, I was their instructor, their biggest cheerleader, and at times their to physically support them. In addition to coaching soccer for people with disabilities I also coached gymnastics, basketball, track and field through Special Olympics. Another position I held where I was able to help people was being a counselor at numerous camps, where at times I was responsible for the 24 hour supervision, safety, and welfare of the campers. Additionally, I worked at an orphanage in the capital of Costa Rica, was a teacher's assistant, and was a member of my high school's Student Government. Training that I have had and courses that I have gone through that relate to helping others include, Wilderness First Aid, FERPA Training, ARMATUS Your Policies, A Day at Day Camp, and California Mandated Reporter Certifications, alongside numerous mandated reporter and abuse trainings I have participated in at my hometown for past jobs. Through my sorority I’ve attended a Sexual Violence Prevention, Alcohol and Drug Prevention, Health and Wellness, Gender and Sexual Diversity and Hazing Prevention education workshops.
