A wise person once said, “Memory is a way of holding onto the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose.” This quote gives you a few reasons why our memories and emotions are so signifiant to our lives. In her novel, The Giver, Lois Lowry uses climax to reveal the theme of memories and emotions are extremely significant to human life, which is still relevant to the modern teenager. In the book, The Giver, the author uses Jonas’ words and actions to reveal the theme: memories and emotions are extremely significant to human life. Jonas always expected to be normal and to also receive a completely normal Assignment. For example, “His heart swelled with gratitude and pride. But at the same time he was filled with fear. He did not know what his selection meant. He did not know what he was to become. Or what would become of him.” Jonas had expected an Assignment that was normal; he expected nothing special or honorable. Since he had never had any experience with being special, he took pride in himself for having a notable talent, even though he was afraid of what was to come. Furthermore, after Jonas’ Assignment had been given, he didn’t know what to do with all of the new information he had received concerning the world’s past. He was overwhelmed with the feelings of love, joy, and happiness, but he had also now experienced pain, anguish, and sorrow. For example, “But the memories tell us that it has not always been. She used the idea of a utopian society to show all of us that we need to have memories and emotions in our lives. I believe that both of these are still relevant to teenagers today. Teens definitely contain multiple emotions in their day to day lives. Memory also plays a huge role in teens as well. Author Guy De Maupassant once said, “Our memory is a more perfect world than the universe: it gives back life to those who no longer exist.” Teenagers sometimes revel in the emotions that they can receive through having memories of things that they once experienced. Having memories of the past and getting to have insight into a full range of emotions makes us complete. The Giver definitely portrayed this many times throughout the storyline. These people in The Giver had never felt the warmth and light that emotions could breathe into you. Additionally, a wise person once said, “Memories are timeless treasures of the heart.” Memories and emotions are something we hold so dear and near to our hearts, and it would be such a dull life without them. The author did an outstanding job of showing me just how important having both of these things in my life truly
