The True Meaning of Self-Reliance! There are two men in a small town, one is a “do it yourself” type of man and the other is a “pay someone to do it for you man”. Many believe that the man who likes to care for his things, himself to be a more self-reliant man than the other man. Today, we will shall try to prove this theory either correct or incorrect and we will break down the meaning of self-reliance and try to figure what it is. We will search and see if being self-reliant means doing everything for yourself with no other help or is there a greater meaning to this broad term. Keep this definition in mind as we explore the interviewee’s opinion on the definition of self-reliance. In my research some of my respondents believed self-reliance to be a representation of “self-control.” Self-control meaning, to be able to manipulate your actions based on wise decisions and not your emotions. Others, like myself see self-reliance as an adaptation of individualism. They believe that there is no one definition for self-reliance that it should be different for every person. Many examinees (4 out of 10) believed the definition to be the same as the Merriam-Webster definition. It’s like you can discover yourself through figuring out your definition to self-reliance. Since I believe it should be tailored differently to each person. No two people should have the same definition for self-reliance. It has a specific meaning in a dictionary, but individually it should begin to form it’s self differently. For a famous boxer, Floyd Mayweather it could even mean different. Mayweather, now a World Champion in boxing, he believes that someone should work hard enough they can obtain their deepest desires. Now this subject can also be linked to self-reliance, Mayweather was self-reliant because he was aware of his options. He wasn’t born a boxer, he was made a boxer the rigorous training and hard work, Floyd used his own personal self-reliance to overcome obstacles and become the champion he is today. Floyd was able to be self-reliant not because he did it all by himself, because he didn’t. For years he signed a contract like many other athletes, until he was able to indorse himself. The fact that he used others doesn’t take away from his self-reliance, but its adds to it.
