“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” (Muhammad Ali). Muhammad Ali, a well known boxer, developed these words of wisdom into his motto. Ali uttered these words just before stepping into the ring with Sonny Liston; namely, Ali won the fight by technical knockout. These words served as a description of Ali’s fighting style, and became a phrase commonly used within the martial arts. In short, it means be light on your feet and move quickly but always strike with force and purpose. The martial arts teaches individuals numerous life lessons and skills, such as: confidence, self-defense techniques, and self-control. I can understand those arguments. However, the martial arts puts people in no more danger than other physical activities. The gear used for contact needs to meet regulations and greatly helps the prevention of injuries. As for the time commitment, classes range from forty five minutes to an hour. That time could be substituted as your daily gym time. The cost of the martial arts does add up. I cannot argue that. Between tuition, purchasing weapons, and purchasing gear, the martial arts can cost more money than most want to spend; however, in an article found on CNBC, Carlo Dellaverson states that “the average gym membership costs between $40 and $50 a month, but when you add the initiation fee, you’re looking at as much as $800 a year.”. Dellaverson also explains that an individual will only use about 70% of the utilities made available to them at a gym. Martial arts classes can be found as low as $45 a month at most community centers and gyms. The initial payment also typically covers a free pair of gloves and t-shirt to get the individual started. The cost of a gym membership may be equal to that of a membership to a martial arts studio, but an individuals use all that they pay for in a martial arts
