Cows are vegetarians by nature. They can be infected when they are forced to eat parts of other infected animals. When animals are slaughtered for human food at least half of the carcass-hide, hooves, entrails, etc can not be sold for human consumption. It’s then sent to a “rendering” plant where it’s ground up, boiled down and driven into the consistency of brown sugar. Now, it’s sold for feed for cows, pigs, chickens and pets.

It was technically named BSE but quickly acquired the mad cow tag because of the way infected cattle behave. (CNN) In 1997, there was an award given to Stanley Prusiner, for concluding that a distorted protein called a prion was responsible for Mad Cow Disease, noted the long incubation period made it difficult to distinguish (Bryant).

Mad cow disease is a vile disease; there is a lot of data about the origin, effects, and symptoms that this article will talk about. One positive side from mad cow disease is that you cannot get it from eating steak or a hamburger etc. There is a deadly disease that humans get that is similar to mad cow disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, otherwise known as vCJD. When you acquire vCJD it is very likely that you will not even realize you have it until a couple years later and in some rare occasions it might take up to 15 years. The origin of mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy, is originated in Great Britain in 1986.

He talks about one of the major issues regarding our health and the meat industry when he mentions the health risks associated with meat consumption. Cattle are now being fed corn which results in a mutation of a strain of E. Coli called E. Coli 0157h7. This is a product of the diet we’re feeding the cows on feedlots. Even if these animals are infectious, they still slaughter and sell them which results in the consumer’s health possibly being effected.
