According to Emmanuel Macron, “The status-quo leads to self-destruction.” Macron’s quote portrays the idea that following the status quo is not always going to end up pleasant. In the late 1700s, a higher status was important to hold. With a higher status, people received more respect. There is also the aspect that by having a higher status meant that person was richer. Most women were expected to marry men with a higher status than her families. By marrying a man with a higher status, a woman’s family would have the knowledge that she would be taken care of. Many times fathers offered their daughters to marry a rich man as a way of creating a business deal. According to Presnell, Hamilton was, “accepted into the Schuyler family despite his illegitimate birth and lack of wealth or social standing.” This reveals that when the Schuyler’s first meet Alexander, he was not socially popular. Even though he did not have a high status, he was still accepted by the Schuylers. Scott states that, Alexander seemed rude and arrogant when he was caught “appraising the room and all [the people] in it” before walking in (4). This demonstrates the need for the audience to know that Alexander was not perfect. He projected an impression of arrogance causing others to think of him as rude and lacking respect. Furthermore, it is presented by Philip Schuyler that, “While courageous, even admirable, such men do not have long lives as soldiers” (Scott 15). This is presented to show the view on soldiers in that time period, and how they were not seen as someone a father would want their daughter to marry. Even though any other women would have rejected Alexander for his position in the war, this represents Eliza’s strength to stand by Alexander despite his flaw of being a soldier that could effortlessly be killed by fighting in battle.
