Lucretia Mott was one of the first Americans to call publicity for women’s rights. Lucretia was born January 3, 1793. She grew up in a Quaker family. Quakers were one of the first groups to practice equality in men and women. After she finished schooling she became assistant teacher of her school. After 4 years of teaching, she moved to Philadelphia to be with her family. Her life was centered around the Quaker church. She supported abolition. She refused to buy products from slave labor. Lucy Stone was born in West Brookfield, Massachusetts on August 13, 1818. Her parents, Francis Stone and Hannah Matthews, were abolitionists and Congregationalists. Stone retained their anti-slavery opinions but rejected the Congregationalist Church after it criticized abolitionists. Along with her anti-slavery attitude, Lucy Stone also pursued a higher education. She completed local schools at the age of sixteen and saved money until she could attend a term at Mount Holyoke Seminary five years later. In 1843, Stone enrolled at the Oberlin Collegiate Institute (later Oberlin College). With her graduation in 1847, she became the first Massachusetts woman to earn a bachelor’s degree. However, Lucy Stone was not done expressing her abolitionist and feminist beliefs to the public (anb.org).

More than three hundred citizens came to take part in one of the most important documents written in women’s history during the Women’s Right’s Convention in upstate Seneca, New York, led by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott on July 19-20, 1848 (Ryder). Stanton became persistent when she included a resolution supporting voting rights for women in the document, intimidated by this notion her loyal husband threatened to boycott the convention. “Even Lucretia Mott warned her, ‘Why Lizzie, thee will make us ridiculous!’ ‘Lizzie,’ however, refused to yield” (Rynder). As Mott dreaded, out of eleven resolutions the most argumentative was the ninth–women’s suffrage resolution. The other 10 resolutions passed consistently. “According to Cady Stanton’s account, most who opposed this resolution did so because they believed it would compromise the others. Up until and during the mid -1800’s, women were stereotyped and not given the same rights that men had. Women were not allowed to vote, speak publically, stand for office and had no influence in public affairs. They received poorer education than men did and there was not one church, except for the Quakers, that allowed women to have a say in church affairs. Women also did not have any legal rights and were not permitted to own property. Overall, people believed that a woman only belonged in the home and that the only rule she may ever obtain was over her children. However, during the pre- Civil war era, woman began to stand up for what they believed in and to change the way that people viewed society (Lerner, 1971). Two of the most famous pioneers in the women’s rights movement, as well as abolition, were two sisters from South Carolina: Sarah and Angelina Grimké.
After many years of battling for equality among the sexes, people today have no idea of the trails that women went through so that women of future generations could have the same privileges and treatment as men. Several generations have come since the women’s rights movement and the women of these generations have different opportunities in family life, religion, government, employment, and education that women fought for. The Women’s Rights Movement began with a small group of people that questioned why human lives, especially those of women, were unfairly confined. Only a third of these girls went on to marry farmers. They instead chose to marry artisans or workers in the city . The young women were moving to the city, and away from the farms. Women were choosing their own husbands, and marrying for affection, instead of letting their parents pick their spouse. During this period was the Second Great Awaking in America, and women moving toward religion during the uncertain times. The leaders of the evangelical clergy preached against drunkenness. They also preached that women were morally stronger than men were. This led women into the temperance movement, increasing their political activities. The Second Great Awaking also led people to realize that slavery was wrong, and “a sin against humanity”. By the 1830s, many American women were involved in trying to end slavery. Women being involved in the movement to end slavery divided the abolitionists. This division was the beginning of the women’s rights movement. Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, two leaders of the fight for women’s rights, called the Seneca Fall Convention to express the views of oppressed women. Elizabeth Cady Stanton expresses her views in the Seneca Falls Declaration when she remarks, “to declare our right to be free as a man is free”. Stanton believes that the Women’s Rights Movement must achieve the democratic ideal of liberty to be successful, so she women can only gain liberty when they have the same rights as men. The Constitution of the Brook Farm Association also portrays many of the goals of the Women’s Rights Movement, especially on education when the document writes, “the benefits of the highest physical, intellectual and moral education”. The womens abolitionists movement was essentially the birth of the American women’s rights movement that lasted from 1858-1920 (Leonhardt 2.A). Womens abolitionism during the time of the civil war was a movement intended to prohibit and end slavery in the states; done by trying to educate the public on the immorality of slavery. These women that joined forces with male protesters helped condemn slavery, calling for an end to the “peculiar institution” (Leonhardt 2.A). It was through women's’ involvement, organization and preparation that some women were able to become some-what respected leaders in the women’s movement.
...zabeth Cady Stanton was born in 1815 and died in 1902. While on a honeymoon, she met a young lady by the name of Lucretia Mott. Both were present at a World’s Anti-Slavery Convention, which Stanton’s husband was a delegate of. Stanton and Mott were infuriated with the rejection of women so they decided to enforce a women’s rights meeting. This meeting was considered a Women’s Rights convention and was held in Seneca Falls. This was the very first meeting and was located in New York. Stanton then composed “The Declaration of Sentiments.” The text proposed that women should receive the right education, and changes of the law to raise the status of a “lady.” Women who attended the very first convention agreed to sign the declaration. In that same of year, Stanton spread protests and appeals to the New York congress to pass acts related to the married women of New York.
Women began standing up for more rights and realizing that they could be treated better. 1840 the World Anti-slavery Convention in London showed a great example of inferiority of women. Women were denied a seat at the convention because they were women. Women like Elizabeth C. Stanton and Lucretia C. Mott were enraged and inspired to launch the women’s rights movement. Elizabeth Stanton promoted women’s right to vote. “If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to forment a rebellion and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or representation.
Slave Rebellions were becoming common and one of the most famous was Nat Turner’s Rebellion. Led by slave preacher Nat Turner, who “became convinced that he had been chosen by God to lead his people to freedom”, a group of almost 80 slaves murdered over 60 white men, women, and children (Slave Rebellions). Maria Stewart was the first black women reported to have delivered a public speech (Coddon). She wrote a manuscript to a black audience that encouraged them not to “kill, burn, or destroy”, but rather “improve your talents… show forth your powers of mind (Coddon).” She wanted black people to know that both God and our founding documents affirmed them as equal with other men (Coddon). Being a black woman herself, she addressed other black women stating “ O, ye daughters of Africa, awake! Awake! Arise! No longer sleep nor slumber, but distinguish yourselves. Show forth the world that ye are endowed with noble and exalted faculties (Coddon).” Stewart believed that the world wasn 't going to change for the blacks, that the blacks had to change for the world, but by changes she meant show the world their worthiness and fight for their equality. Another woman fighting for equality was Sojourner Truth. Truth, formerly known as Isabella and former slave, was singer and public speaker against slavery (Coddon). SHe was the only black delegate at the Worcester, Massachusetts women’s rights convention in 1850 (Coddon).
In the beginning of the 1840s and into the 1850s, a rather modest women’s reform was in the process. This group was full of visionaries that began a movement that would soon lobby in change and this movement was the groundwork of equality for women and their right to vote within in the United States. Despite their efforts this movement required a length of seventy years to establish this necessarily equality and the right for all women to vote along the side of men. Anthony was considered the leader of the Women’s Rights Movement after she was denied the right to speak in a temperance convention; she had the responsibility of creating the National Women’s Suffrage Association (NWSA) and helping to secure voting rights by her historic court case, the Trials of Susan B. Anthony. Elizabeth Cady Stanton was an important women’s rights activist that helped plan the first organized women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York and wrote the Declaration of Sentiments. Lucretia Mott worked along with Elizabeth Cady Stanton to plan the first women’s rights convention and wrote the, “Discourse on Women”. Lucy Stone formed the American Women’s Suffrage Association (AWSA) and convince individual states to join the effort towards women rights. These women had an influence in the National American Women’s Suffrage Association’s (NAWSA) achievement of the goals in the Women’s Rights Movement. These women had a profound effect on reaching equal rights between men and women.
