In "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas," Le Guin uses a utopian-like society to portray the struggle for peace and happiness, an integral value a society strives for, with the city's deception. She starts out the story describing a festival where the people are “joyous” (1 of 4). "[Merry] women [carry] their babies and [chat]" while others ”went dancing" and children play "naked in the bright air" (1 of 4). Throughout the city of Omelas, “one could hear the music winding through the city streets” and “the air that from time to time trembled” from the “clangings of the bells” (1 of 4). However, she also mentions that in the basement of a “beautiful public [building],” a child "[haunches] in the corner" of the closet, not knowing what "humane treatment" is (3 of 4) (4 of 4). After reading what Le Guin has to add about the Omelans, it is an appalling discovery. The Omelans appear to be a friendly and merry civilization, better than the society in this world. However, when these people live off the suffering of the child and knows it’s existence, the exploitation makes them just as horrendous as this civilization. These people seem to care about keeping the well-being of Omelas and it’s citizens, but they do nothing to change the situation of the child. Unfortunately, the people do not know what to do about the child because the prosperity of the city "[depends] wholly on this child's abominable misery" (3 of 4). “Most people feel horrible for the child, and some parents hold their kids tighter, and then they return to their happiness” (Brooks). The child is a reminder for the people to remember to continue the happiness, because if the child is "cleaned and fed and comforted," all of the people's livelihoods would be destroyed (4 of 4).
