In the novel, Lisa, written by Carol Matas, the main character, Lisa has become a heroic person. People become courageous after they have gone through a tragic event. Lisa becomes braver through her experience on her first mission, she learns to become adventurous through relationship with her mentors, and expanding her fearlessness through experiences with her allies. During her hero’s journey, Lisa developes by becoming a braver and stronger person, therefore she is able to help her family and friends find freedom. She learns to become more fearless while working with them to help the Jewish. Jesper and Stefen volunteer to stay behind to help their family and friends escape. They try to convince Lisa to stay behind with them because they do not have enough people, and because Lisa has a lot of experience with guns. Lisa was debating at first, saying “ I don’t know if I should stay. This is too dangerous, I’m not as good as Susanne with guns. You know that. I think all of us should just go on the boat. If the German soldiers find us, they will kill all of us” (90). After a while Lisa says that she will stay. Lisa, Jesper and Stefan stay behind to help all the Jewish get on the boat safely and in the course of 3 days Lisa has killed a total of 3 German soldiers. This is significant because throughout these tasks, Lisa and her mentors have successfully transferred the Jewish to the boats safely without being caught by the Nazis. Every Jewish people has escaped Denmark without being hurt. After this mission, Lisa learns to become fearless and now killing a person to her is very simple, unlike before, she could not even hold a gun properly. As the stories progress, each character experiences their own desire for better; they have found something that will better their lives. As they struggle to gain their prize, hardships string into place to hinder their path. Jasmine must overcome the death of her husband to get to America. She must also find her way illegally into the country and settle somewhere suitable. When a man helps her into the country, she is very grateful, but the man rapes her. She kills the man, “the human form beneath it grew smaller and smaller” (Mukherjee 119), and escapes to finish the job she had set out for.

In the novel, Everyone Leaves by Wendy Guerra, she reveals that challenges least expected determine a person’s growth in life through the protagonist, Nieve Guerra. Although Nieve desires to leave Cuba, her chances of escape are obstructed by obstacles she faces in the novel.

Eva Hoffman’s memoir, Lost in Translation, is a timeline of events from her life in Cracow, Poland – Paradise – to her immigration to Vancouver, Canada – Exile – and into her college and literary life – The New World. Eva breaks up her journey into these three sections and gives her personal observations of her assimilation into a new world. The story is based on memory – Eva Hoffman gives us her first-hand perspective through flashbacks with introspective analysis of her life “lost in translation”. It is her memory that permeates through her writing and furthermore through her experiences. As the reader we are presented many examples of Eva’s memory as they appear through her interactions. All of these interactions evoke memory, ultimately through the quest of finding reality equal to that of her life in Poland. The comparison of Eva’s exile can never live up to her Paradise and therefore her memories of her past can never be replaced but instead only can be supplemented.
Between Vega’s “The Story of Pedro Serrano” and Saer’s The Witness, each character discovered their own truths and purpose in life. For Serrano, his was the journey to achieve the balance between nature and civilization and twisting it for his own benefit much like he did with the resources on the island. For the nameless narrator, his journey was to gain the identity of what would end up a lost civilization and share their story with the world, ensuring that they would live on and be understood.
There is another type of hero that almost no one is aware of. In the poorest areas of the country, live mostly minorities and other ethic background. All their lives they’ve been expected to work harder and expected not succeed in life. Some individuals living in poverty with a determination to succeed work hard all of their lives to become what everybody doubted they could. Escaping the crime, drugs, and prostitution is enough to escape hell, even if they don’t go to college. Despite of their financial problems, drug and crime surroundings, or difficulties in the language skills, their desire to triumph fuels their persistence. Those who make it to success are the few living examples of the purest form of hero anyone can be. They are not only their own heroes but also the heroes of the poor children who dream of becoming like them someday.
