This past week I enjoyed learning about Martin Luther King Jr. I definitely have studied him in my past years at school, but it was different in this class. I really enjoyed making applications to how Martin Luther King Jr. was a leader in many ways. After reading “I Have a Dream” speech and listening to the presentations, I feel that I have learned a lot more about why he wrote the speech the way he did. Also, I have never heard of or read the letters to Birmingham jail before this class. I enjoyed reading this letter and learning more about Martin Luther King Jr. than what I had already learned. Martin Luther King Jr. was a leader in so many ways. Starting out as just a popular Minister in church all the way up to being a leader for the civil rights movement. He definitely knew what he wanted to accomplish when talking to each audience. He knew just want to say to the people in the “I Have a Dream” speech. This speech was definitely not something that was just thrown together and it took a lot of time and effort that went into each one. This letter shows exactly how Martin Luther King Jr. put a ton of thought into what he was saying to his specific audiences. The one part that stood out the most in these letters was when Martin Luther King Jr. was sharing his personal stories. He shared about how his daughter would ask him why the white people would be so mean to the colored people. Martin Luther King Jr. shared how segregation has impacted his family personally. This part of the letter causes the reader to feel very down and wanting to see a change in our country. His personal examples from his life shows that segregation effected the children just as much as the adults. I have never heard of the Letter from Birmingham Jail until after this class, and it definitely was an eye opener on who Martin Luther King Jr.
