Lessons to be Learned in A Thousand Splendid Suns
A powerful, moving, eye opening novel is what should be taught in the grade 12 curriculum. A Thousand Splendid Suns written by Khaled Hosseini is just that. It is an incredible novel which gives students a better understanding of the 4U course. Firstly, the author explores literacy devices which illustrates effectively and is applicable for the 4U student and their journey to post secondary school. Secondly, A Thousand Splendid suns relates to the novel The Kite Runner as they both have main characters with tragic flaws in their lives similar to Amir, Hassan and Baba. It uses a woman protagonist instead of male, giving the reader a different prospective to life in Afghanistan as a female instead of a male. Lastly, the duality of human nature through the difference of characters, tying the novel to an important theme in the course. Therefore, Khaled Hosseini’s A thousand Splendid Suns is an incredibly moving novel which should be taught in the grade twelve curriculum as students would only benefit from reading this novel.
Throughout the grade twelve course, students are required to learn literacy devices to give them have a better understanding in the 4U english course. In the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, multiple devices are used throughout the novel demonstrating a better understanding for students. Foreshadowing, Irony and, Metaphors, frequently occurred in this novel. What is an ideal parent ? In A Thousand Splendid Suns Khaled Hosseini strenuously suggests a good parent is someone who shows affection to their child, shows attentiveness in their child’s life, encourages them to do marvelous things, and have a positive influential affect on their life. Throughout this book it’s exemplifies good parenting, and Laila’s father Babi is an example of an authoritarian parent. In the book , he spends all of his free time with Laila and always tells her how much he loves her even when her mother Fariba is secluding herself from Laila’s life this is clear when he says, “Sometimes , when your mother’s having one of her really dark days, I feel like you're all I have, Laila.” Good parenting also comes with the ability of being able to provide abundant amounts of attention towards the child and show interest in their life.

Overall, Khaled Hosseini wrote a story, based on experiences from his own life and the history of Afghanistan from the turn of the 20th century until present day. He added the universal human theme of being good again, allowing this book and these characters to appeal to readers everywhere. He also crafted one of the most successful and popular novels in the Afghan American genre. Looking at the The Kite Runner from the outside in, or from the perspective of the author’s life and Afghanistan’s past, it is easy to see that Hosseini manages to open the eyes of the Western reader. A person on this side of the International Date Line is forced to reconsider their general perspective and beliefs about Muslims and Afghanistan after picking up The Kite Runner.

Due to the use of these devices, books that would otherwise have nothing in common can be compared. For instance, the books Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift, and If I Stay by Gayle Forman have different plots and themes. But when both are examined closely, it is evident that they utilize many different and similar literary devices.
A thousand splendid suns (2007) is a novel written by the Afghan-American author Khaled hosseini. The novel addresses both aspects, which he evaluates and points out to his readers. Hosseini tries to point out two young women in the following way. Mariam is an illegitimate child, and suffers from both the stigma surrounding her birth along with the abuse she faces throughout her marriage. Laila, born a generation later, is comparatively privileged during her youth until their lives intersect and she is also forced to accept a marriage proposal from Rasheed, Mariam's husband.
