There are two theories that shows throughout the movie, Feminist Theory and Social Exchange Theory. The Feminist Theory is strongly portrayed by Leigh Anne Tuohy throughout the whole movie. She is a strong, proud, loyal woman that wears herself confidently in front of everyone. For example, when Leigh Anne went to the projects despite Michael telling her to never go there without him, she was harassed by a couple of the residents and stood up for herself by threatening the leader with the ‘piece’ she always keep in her purse. She broke the traditional view of a scared, compliant woman that the typical southern female is seen as. This illustrates how strong-willed and how loyal she is to Michael. Her friends look and act like the typical southern belle that is a housewife and follows the rules set out for them in the Patriarchal south society, but Leigh Anne set aside those conventional views and stood up to her friends when they insulted and judged the decision to give Michael a home and family. Elaine says, “What will your daddy say?” to which Leigh Anne responds with, “Look, here's the deal. I don't need any of y'all to approve of my choices. But I do ask you to respect them. You have no idea what this boy's been through.” Also, she killed the southern perspective of African-American people when she is faced with the comment, “That's awesome for you, but... what about Collins?” that is given by Elaine, “...Aren't you worried, even just a little? I mean he is a boy, a large, black boy, sleeping under the same roof.”, Leigh Anne shakes her head and looks at them with disappointment saying, “Shame on you.”.
