Rococo or also known as "Late Baroque" is an artistic movement and style that occurred in the 18th century. It first developed in the early 18th century in Paris, France when the French King Louis XIV wanted more youthful art to be produced. (All That Is Interesting. 2016) Later, it spread to the rest of France and then later in other countries, like Germany and Austria too.
The Rococo style was very different to all the other art periods as it was highly decorated. Pastel-palette colours, that are soft and light, were mainly used. He was born in Grasse, France. He was well-known from others by his exuberant style. One of Fragonard’s famous paintings is The Swing. (Jean-Honoré Fragonard. 2016)
This oil painting is on canvas created in 1766. It depicts a man lying on the ground looking up at his mistress on the swing. The mistress is being pushed on the swing by her husband. (Artble – The Swing. 2016) The mistress, clearly being the focal point, is painted in a warm soft pink colour. The whole painting uses soft even brushstrokes, pastel colours and soft lighting. The man lying on the ground was painted in lighter colours and his face is much lighter than the man pushing the swing.
The diagonal lines of the rope, leads the viewer’s eye to the girl on the swing and so does the man’s outstretched arm. The shrubs and trees create a frame for the girl on the swing and thus emphasizing her. The use of line in the woman’s dress creates repetition and suggests movement as she sways on the swing. The man’s face is much lighter than the husband’s creating a strong contrast. The space in the painting is not real, it’s pectoral space. The art piece praises love - there are cupids flying around the couples and pushing some people closer to each other. The art work shows scenery that contributes towards the composition. The painting is radically off-balance and this is evidently an artwork of Rococo. The theme is happy and peaceful and brings a joyful mood. One of Watteau’s talents was using a light, airy brushstroke. This is done to create a dream-like atmosphere. This can be seen in the clouds as part of the landscape and the leaves.
