On dumpster diving
Lars' on dumpster diving is not a piece which is meant to be taken in a pitiful way. At the end of the essay he himself says he feels sorry for those that he scavenges from, those that put sentiment into material wealth. He goes into great detail on his dumpster diving exploits. The message of this essay is one of resilience and to make do with what one has. Examples are used quite frequently, the pizza shop or the fire ants, but also his language when he says "he may wipe off the egg yolk off the can but he cannot erase the stigma of eating eating garbage".

The examples used in the essay are the main contributions to the message. Without examples or really without a fine overall story the text simply can't be interesting. Even a very awkward structure and complex words can make a for a good and easy read if the story can enthrall the reader. It would be difficult to connect with the text and author if he had said that he went through peoples trash for blackmail or something of the sort and it would also be difficult if he had treated his dog poorly. The development of his character, the noble scavenger, may not add to the story in a truly significant way but it does make sure that the reader can't look down upon Lars in a negative light, ethically speaking that is. When he speaks of his belief that digging through personal trash is a bit inappropriate because of how personal it is and he gives two major examples, the athlete with the betting tickets and the woman that broke up with her boyfriend. He also shows great love for his dog, Lizbeth. He also doesn't waste the opportunities that he is given when it comes to his scavenging and the scavenging lifestyle is good for society as what would have been thrown away as trash he used for his own
