Langston Hughes was a prominent artist of the Harlem Renaissance and one of the primary contributors during that time. His poetry empowered African Americans through their fight for racial equality. His prominence led to him being offered teaching positions at a number of colleges, but he rarely accepted. However, he did accept a position for three months in 1949 at the integrated Laboratory School of the University of Chicago as a Visiting Lecturer on Poetry. He concluded that teaching did not allow for adequate amount of time for creative writing.
Throughout Hughes’s life leading up to his success as a writer and poet he faced many difficult times and criticism from his white counter parts. The well known poet Langston Hughes was an inspiring character during the Harlem Renaissance to provide a push for the black communities to fight for the rights they deserved. Hughes wrote his poetry to deliver important messages and provide support to the movements. When he was at a young age a teacher introduced him to poets Carl Sandburg and Walt Whitman, and they inspired him to start his own. Being a “darker brother,” as he called blacks, he experienced and wanted his rights, and that inspired him. Although literary critics felt that Langston Hughes portrayed an unattractive view of black life, the poems demonstrate reality. Hughes used the Blues and Jazz to add effect to his work as well as his extravagant word use and literary tools help get the point he is pushing at across. Growing up as an African American boy there were situations where people prejudged him just because of his skin tone, of course the situations were hurtful, but it later on helped build a powerful story or poem (Ed 2). Coupled with the African American working class, an individual 's race created a separation between people (Sundquist 2). The separation of individuals for no other reason but their skin tone infuriated Hughes and he took it to pen and paper to express the differences and opposing treatment of civilians (Sundquist 2). When it came to Langston Hughes the achievement of being the best was not his goal, rather it was to get his words across and let people relate or realize what he is telling. His social activism and and use of a diverse voice as a celebration of black culture makes him one of the most important writers of the 1920s. The theme of diverse voices can apply to very many topics. In the case of Hughes, it relates to the topic of changing ideas about race because of how in depth Hughes attempts to grasp his audience. In his poem, he structures his poem as a Negro, a slave, a worker, a singer, and a victim. As he compares himself to these different people, he gives a brief description of each person.

To fulfill this task, he wrote 15 volumes of poetry, six novels, three books, 11 plays, and a variety of non-fiction work (Daniel 760). He also edited over 50 books in his time (McKay).
