Understanding Racial Inequity: A Study of Angelou's 'Caged Bird'

The poem “Know why the caged bird sings” is about a bird that is trapped in a cage and a free bird. It is a metaphoric poem that represents African Americans and how their lives are so different to “white” peoples lives. The author Maya Angelou is a well known civil rights activist and an award winning author. She wrote this poem trying to make people come to the realisation on how this society affects African Americans. She became a noble friend of Malcolm X who was an activist for African Americans, this friendship unfolded her career of becoming an activist for human rights.

In this poem, the 2 birds, one trapped and one free, really changes your out look on human rights. The bird that is trapped feels hopeless and fearful whereas the bird flying free it’s living it’s life in a blissful world. The bird trapped in the cage is repeatedly heard throughout the poem to be crying in fear, this really outlines the alarming sense of fright this miserable caged bird feels. A quote that supports this is “The caged bird sings with a fearful trill”. This quote that is repeated throughout the poem makes the reader feel sad and sympathetic for the trapped bird.

The author Maya Angelou has used personification numerous times throughout the poem as the poem reflects a human’s experience. A repetitive and common example of this is “The caged bird sings” birds are unable to sing therefor giving a human characteristic to an object. Maya has also acquainted repetition, using the same stanza twice “The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom.” Another device was the use of a couplet in the sentence “The caged bird sings with fearful trill of the things unknown but longed for
