The Impact of The Kingdom of Matthias on Today’s Gender Roles In The Kingdom of Matthias by Johnson and Wilentz, the authors clearly show the significance that the historical events had on the larger economic, social, and religious changes occurring in the United States during the 1820s and 1830s. Both social hierarchy and gender played a large role in the changes during that time period. This event changed the role of American religion during the early nineteenth century. Non-traditional religions such as Mormonism resulted from this religious revival movement as well. The religious revivals that emphasized individual choice of humans over predestination of God continuously shook New England Calvinism. The “cult of Matthias” was unlike any other religious groups during the time period. Matthias’ rules “reflected Jewish law as he understood it” (109). In his kingdom, Matthias assigned roles to people based on their spirits such as working in the garden and making clothes for the children. He was “a prophet of abundance” and “reinforced rules about food and its preparation” (108-109). The roles of women have transformed from housekeepers and servants to helpmates, teachers, and much more. There is no longer a rule of the patriarch. There are now women running for President, such an occurrence that was not seen in the early nineteenth century. Men and women have come together to achieve success.
