The Story of an Hour. (1894)

Kate Chopin’s story The Story of the Hour is the best story just because its plot is captivating, the theme freedom in the story was well portrayed through the perfect usage of language, the characters development, setting of the story and from the title of this story.

The story is about a woman called Mrs. Mallard who is the main character in this story; she receives shocking news about the death of her husband who was involved in a railroad disaster. This is despite the narrator hinting that the husband may not be dead, through the use of the word “killed” in parenthesis. This news is told by her sister and her husband’s friend Richards. In this story, language is used to create a climax through suspense. Kate uses rhetorical questions to achieve a climax and create an atmosphere of tension. “What was it? She did not know; it was too subtle and elusive to name. However, she felt it, creeping out of the sky, reaching towards her through the sounds, the scents, and the color that filled the air. ” From the structure of this sentence we can notice that the narrator is afraid of something, this could also be a premonition of the things to come. Although the narrator may have thought this was just a sign of freedom but this was foreshadowing the death which late took her. “The face that had never looked save with love upon her.” The narrator is bitter with Mr. Mallard and marriage. This also shows the character trait of Mrs. Mallard to be a sarcastic person. The narrator says that she will cry when she sees the kind tender hands in death. This is very sarcastic because she confesses that she does not love him anymore.
