The Kardashians have definitely made a name for themselves, but most people associate that name with being bad influences. Sure the origins of their fame is questionable at best, stemming from Kim’s short film and their father defending a most likely guilty man. However, just because their beginning was less than ideal doesn’t mean that they are bad people now or undeserving of their fame. For instance in their show, they talk about a lot of important topics in the modern world like gun control and anxiety and expose the younger audience and the public in general to real issues in a fun and informal setting. In fact, the majority of participants in a study regarding the negative effects of reality shows agreed that reality TV encourages college students' alcohol consumption and overwhelmingly agreed that reality TV depicted alcohol consumption as glamorous with far fewer recognizing any depiction of negative consequences (Paredes). Some say that celebrities make good role models. However, that's not always the case. Some might say that this is not an important issue, but think about all the younger kids that look up to celebrities such as Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, and the very famous Kim Kardashian. Their reckless behavior can influence the future generation to do more bad than good in today’s society.
Much of today’s society seems obsessed on what actors/actress, athletes, and music artist are wearing, eating, who they are marrying, dating, where they are vacationing, what affairs they are having or have had, and how they live their everyday lives. What’s so interesting about this obsession is as a society we are implacable and often place celebrities on a pedestal, only to destroy them when they are illusive or promiscuous. Media outlets are swift to report when celebrities are in trouble but quickly forget all their accomplishments. It’s as if we want them to be perfect but once they are associated with a scandal we embark on destroying their reputation and character. Should society hold celebrities to higher standards just because they are paid millions for endorsements and a craft they worked hard to perfect? Calling fame the root of all evil is too easy though, not everything is black and white, there must be a little grey, and there is. Not all children who grow up on the set or amongst other famous people turn out so badly. It isn't fair to stereotype all players to one game, especially when there have been plenty of examples to contradict that thought. These kids in the environment of the famous are just like you and I, they are people too, this means they depend on things that “regular” people depend on. Since many people use media very frequently, it is obvious to assume that it has affects on people. According to the text book Media Now, "media effects are changes in knowledge, attitude, or behavior that result from exposure to the mass media," (386). This leaves us with many unanswered questions about media and its influences. This paper will look at how the effects of media are determined and explore the main affects on today’s society - violence, prejudice, and sexual behavior.
