Doctor Strange is a unique movie in the fact that on the surface, it seems like a movie that belongs in the romanticism movement; but, after looking beneath the surface, one realizes it actually belongs in the genre of realism. Through the writer's creation of the mirror dimension, a place out of the ordinary is created that follows no actual rules of physics. It is within this dimension that the movie seems as though it is in the romanticism movement. Derrickson is “Known for his work as a horror director”(Truitt), directing Deliver Us From Evil and Sinister, in which unbelievable topics are presented on the surface that have many aspects of the realism movement beneath the surface. Todd McCarthy, from the Hollywood Reporter, describes the actors as normally topping the cast of a British drama set in the recent past. But here, these actors’ skills command respect, turning what could be a juvenile movie into a more realistic performance. Strange’s journey, though very unrealistic on the surface, is driven by his previous experiences as he tries to make sense of his new reality. “This story of Strange's rise to power could take place in any era”(Nicholson). This journey from being a brilliant surgeon, to being a broken man, to being sorcerer supreme could easily be viewed as a proponent to prove that Doctor Strange is a movie in the romanticism movement. However after taking a closer look at Strange’s motivations “as his livelihood, love-life, and psyche disintegrate around him, he exhausts pretty much every medical avenue available in search of a remedy, to no avail” (McGrath), this leads to him becoming the sorcerer supreme, even though the actions are the efforts of an everyday egocentric man, who only wants to return to his former glory. Strange is an everyday man who does extraordinary things only because he is motivated by realistic factors to obtain the goal every person wishes to
