One might think a progressing blind man may feel depressed and highly upset about his condition, but for one man this is not the case. In the essay “Blindness”, written by Argentinian Jorge Luis Borges, talks about his perspective of being literally blind and talks about blindness figuratively. Through his primary audience, which is people who know little to no knowledge about being blind, and people with disabilities themselves. Borges purpose is a moving meditation on being visually impaired and to explain how being blind isn’t a misfortune, but an amazing opportunity to look at the world in a different light. Borges states “Blindness has not been for me a total misfortune; it should not be seen in a pathetic way. It should be seen as a way of life: one of the styles of living.” (pg. 5) From this we can understand that Borges is saying blindness isn’t necessarily a disability, but a way to look at the world in a new light and gain many new perspectives from the other heightened senses such as listening to others that surround him. Borges states, “We may believe that Homer never existed, but that the Greeks imagined him as blind in order to insist on the fact that poetry is, above all, music; that poetry is, above all, the lyre; that the visual can or cannot exist in a poet.” (pg. 6) Borges is talking about blindness literally and figuratively. Essentially, Borges is telling his audience that blindness isn’t necessarily a disability because you may still do everything you wish it just may become better due to being visually impaired. The disability heightens your other senses and makes you see the world in a different form and think differently about many things especially when you are different than other people.
