Don’t take our word for it - see why 10 million students trust us with their essay needs.
In today’s society, college students are often told that we need to focus on pursuing careers that offer financial security rather than pursuing a career the we love. In the graphic novel “Johnny Bunko: The Last Career Guide You’ll Ever Need”, author Daniel Pink challenges this idea. Rather than trying to pursue a career because it makes money, the author uses characters such as Johnny’s coach, Dianne to tell us otherwise, providing six elements that will ensure you great success. Upon graduating high school, several parents, professors, and advisors tell students they need to “stick to the plan.” The whole concept of the plan focuses on selecting majors that provide a wide range of career options instead of choosing majors that sound interesting and have potential to makes us feel passionate about our work. In the novel, however, Diane puts this …show more content…
By capitalizing on your strengths, you shift your focus on what makes you good at a certain skill and can use these to further yourself in success. Following this lesson, the third idea presented introduces the idea that “It’s not about you.” When you first think about this, it appears contradictory. If we focus on making our own plan and mastering our strengths to achieve success, shouldn’t success be for an individual? While the notion does appear odd, the idea becomes more clear once explained. Your purpose on the Earth is to make a difference and to better the people around you. We achieve success by improving the chance of opportunity to others. While it first appears as though success is individual, it actually dives deeper. The fourth lesson presented “persistence trumps talent” is essential for college students. We might not be as good at our passions as another individual in our field who is born with the talent. However, through persistence, we achieve success because we focus more on what we want to do to make ourselves successful. The fifth idea is
“There is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs,” was said by motivational speaker and American author Zig Ziglar. This relates to Carol S. Dweck’s article “Brainology” and Sherman Alexie’s essay “Superman and Me.” Ziglar, Dweck, and Alexie all feel that it isn’t easy for someone to become successful. It takes hard work, perseverance, and the want to learn and grow. In Dweck’s article, she stated that someone with a growth mindset would become more successful and knowledgeable than someone with a fixed mindset, which was demonstrated by Alexie in his essay, and by a personal experience of my own.
Most people throughout the world strive for success in each task they take on, and along with this, many reasons contribute to why they succeed or not. If a person does not succeed, they may automatically blame themselves because of their level of strength. Others may blame themselves for not having enough knowledge about what they are trying to succeed at. The real reason that people may not succeed, however, is their lack of determination and happiness throughout his/her journey that is demonstrated in the book Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell.
Introduction- In order to succeed in life, you have to be open to trying new experiences, even if you know you might fail. If you do fail, you have to persevere and try again if you want to reach your goal. To become better than you are, you must be exposed to new ideas and moments of failure and doubt.
Peter Tkach was enrolling for classes his last semester of his third year at Willamette University. He had done well throughout his educational career, matured through personal experiences, but he soon realized that his four years of college were coming to an end soon and that he needed to determine what he would be doing for the rest of his life, or at least post graduation. Peter decided to enroll in Dr. Houser’s Theories of Career Development in hope of discovering a career path that suited his formal education. Throughout the class he was exposed to Trait-Factor Theory, Personality Theory, Developmental Theory, and Social Learning Theory. He received great career lessons from The Adventures of Johnny Bunko, which he later applied into looking for an internship and career. Peter was able to use these theories and concepts to his own life through completing the assignments and by the end of the class, he was no longer lost in search of a career path, but had a career he wanted to pursue and got an internship for the following summer.
The results of hard work are astronomical. Despite popular belief, efforts to succeed do not go unnoticed, such as the practice that goes into mastering a hobby, skill, or talent. All throughout one’s life, people are told to work hard and to try their best at everything they accomplish. This has an effect on what is widely considered to be success and how to achieve it. Although many credit others’ victories to innate talent, the true key to success does not lie in talent, but in hard work.
Effectively, success does not just happen. It is made to happen, especially through chasing personal dreams and aspirations. It is also made to happen when we consciously pursue our purposes in life, particularly guided by our own inborn abilities. We should never be discouraged by our heritage or cultural backgrounds. We should not even be worried about lack of opportunities. Pursuing our passion will certainly lead us into exploiting our full potential, as we contribute to the improvement of the welfare of humanity. Alongside, we will get what we rightly deserve – invaluable rewards.
To give my personal philosophy of success I would first have to define “success”. Success is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. My success philosophy that I plan on implementing from now on is accepting personal responsibility for the good and bad choices I make. There will be time when I need to focus on school and worry less about my free time. If I have a test to take I have to study for that test to get a good grade and continuous good grades will help me pass the course. I can’t depend on anyone else to do my work for me I’m personally responsible for completing my assignments and turning them in on time. When the weekend comes around and all I do is procrastinate by telling myself I’ll study later. The smart thing to do about this situation would be to think wise and use my time-management strategies. I’ll always have time for myself, so sacrificing some free time now is well worth it. This helps me to be a creator and not the victim about things and keeping up with the self-management strategy. The success strategies that I will use will help my learning style, self-management and self-responsibility. Most people believe success is just having lots of money, cars, and women but I believe success is an individual sport and I have to be ready to play because the outcome of my performance is based on the work I put into it.
Upon analyzes of the thought provoking topics within the book What Color Is Your Parachute?, it is difficult to not acknowledge career planning and goal setting is a process which successful professionals all undertake in some form. The idea, however, that is most captivating is in order to succeed individuals must not only understand their strengths and weaknesses, but also possess a complete understanding of themselves as individuals. Many of the choices made by young adults regarding career are made regarding their areas of expertise or passion. While these elements should be seen as factors in career decision-making, they are simply two components of an individual.
“Success requires more than talent.”(Clifton, Anderson, Schreiner, 2006) I will focus on developing my strengths/talents daily and using them more in depth. StrengthsQuest suggests engaging in happy healthy relationships, valuing my strengths and talents, and remembering my purpose will lead to fulfilling my goals ( Clifton, Anderson, Schreiner, 2006)
Recently students have had a lot to think about when it comes to our future and what we need to do to get our career and future on track. So to get some insight and some very useful help I met with Gayle Tucker of Fast Signs here in Sioux Falls. Gayle studied graphic design at South Dakota State University where she found her passion for design. I asked Gayle why she chose to pursue this field. She started out wanting to be a fashion designer but learned how little she could do with it here in South Dakota. This is when she found graphic design where she could pursue her love of design and still hold a solid career. She also found it to be more fulfilling to be creative, where everything else seemed to lack or feel mundane.
Believing that hard work pays off in the end is more than an idea to motivate an individual, it is the difference between the ability to strive for success or the breaking point for an individual who believes in “I can’t.” An individual who has the desire for success and believes he or she can achieve anything has the ability to go far. Success for college and beyond is established through the vital skills of motivation, responsibility, and strength. To master all three items is to find success.
As I entered high school, I focused my desire for individual success on my personal and academic life. I felt an urgency not only to do my best but also to be the best in every class. Motivated by competition, I turned inward, avoiding group study sessions. In addition to losing sight of the team -- of my friends and how we could learn together -- I also lost sight of my own needs, failing to seek basic accommodations for my hearing impairment. Trapped within the walls of this MJ-like worldview, I defined success solely in terms of individual greatness -- in terms of how much better I did than my peers.
One of the decisions many high school students confront is what they want to pursue in life; some options are work, study at a university, or pursue a technical education. Some students choose to study at a university to explore different areas of study to pursue. Every area of study has its own requirements in order to be successful in that area. In my personal career search, as many students experience, I have the sometimes painful selection of what I want to do as an adult. I have two professions that I would like to pursue, Architecture and Engineering.
Colleges and universities need to be structured so that they prepare students for specific career roles, as well as give them a level of appreciation for the world in which they live. Brewer’s succe...
At times we may doubt our dreams, we wonder if our dreams could one day truly become a reality. We encounter a numberless amount of challenges throughout our lifetimes, many we have no say in the outcome, but many that we do. We have two choices when faced with adversity; we can either turn our backs and quit or stand up and fight back. This is what it comes down to ultimately, how far we’re willing to go to fulfill our dreams. Successful individuals don’t get discouraged from achieving greatness. They pave their own path to success by keeping their dreams in mind and taking the necessary risks to achieve their
