Article Review: The Economy: We Are All Keynesian’s Now
This article is based on the economic ideas of John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946) and how they influenced the economy of America at the time of the depression and beyond. The article was written in 1965 when Lyndon Johnson was the President, and the country was locked in a war with Vietnam. Keynes was a respected economist who wrote a vast number of essays, tracts, and books, the greatest of which was The General Theory, published in 1936. He was a graduate of Eton and Cambridge, chairman of various societies, teacher, bank director, and editor of the British Economic Journal. He was initially viewed as a mischievous socialist left-wing, and his ideas were dismissed as unorthodox.
Keynes’ ideas gained credence as he diverted from what his predecessors in the study of economics were doing. While Marx, Smith, Ricardo, and Malthus focused on specific items on the economy, such as labor and wages, the marketplace, rent, and land and population, Keynes chose to look at the economy as a whole (“The Economy”).
