John Cheever, born in Quincy, Massachusetts, was a child of Frederick Cheever and Mary Cheever. As a child, his life was not that hard; expect he had to deal with the neglect by his father and his workaholic mother. He didn’t get good grades in school, yet he is still one of the finest writers in America. In many of John’s stories he references his parents with negative terms such as “workaholic mother” or “hard-drinking father”. John was conceived while his father was drunk. There aren’t many orphans in John’s short stories, but many of the boys feel unwanted or unloved by their fathers (Meanor 116). His father was a shoe salesman till the 1920s when he lost his job. At this time Mary decided to open up a gift shop in order to keep the family a float. John attended a private school for a soon period of time. His performance was poor so he then transferred to Quincy High, where he later won a short story contest by the Boston Herald. Because of this, he was invited back to Thayer Academy as a “special student”, but unfortunately was expelled. This is revealed to the readers when Francis mentions seeing a maid at party from the war. After the plane crash, Weed seems to start “neglecting” his kids. He becomes very annoyed and impatient with them throughout the story. Cheever’s father was very neglectful towards him. He was an alcoholic. Francis’s wife was not a working woman but she did care very deeply about how people saw her and when Francis messed it up, she became very argue at him.
