Upon taking office in 1960, Kennedy proposed the civil rights bill and the space exploration program. Kennedy also supported the Cold War from the 1950s. After the Cuban Missile Crisis, negotiations between the Soviet Union, United States, and Great Britain were made to limit nuclear arms. Race relations worsened after the 1954 U.S. Supreme Court decision to desegregate schools. In 1963, a bomb exploded in an African American church killing four girls and Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. Also in 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested for marching in Birmingham, Alabama, without a permit.
