A recurring title for Jesus in the Gospel of Mark is the Son of God, which is evident in the centurion quote seen in Mark 15:39 “…when the centurion…saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, ‘Truly this man was God’s Son!’.” This scripture reference is subtitled as the Death of Jesus, which portrays Him as the Suffering Messiah for He died and came back to life. Through his pain and suffering, it was the centrepiece of God’s loving plan to save all people. The Son of God relates to Mark’s Gospel as it frequently shows the divinity and Messianic Suffering Jesus went through for the followers of the Kingdom of God. Another title commonly used in the Gospel of Mark is ‘teacher’. This is shown in chapter 12:30-31 where Jesus was teaching a man about loving God with all your heart, the man replies “Well said, teacher, you are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him”. The title displays Jesus as a teacher because in many cases Jesus peaches to his audience about the Kingdom of God and various lessons to help overcome specific barriers their lives. So, the picture painted in the Parable of the Mustard Seed by Jesus is of the humble begins of the church experiencing an explosive rate of growth. It grows large and becomes a source of food, rest and shelter, for both believers and false professing individuals that seek to consume or take advantage of its benefits while residing or mixing among what was produced by the seed (1 corinthians 5:1, 6:7; 2 Corinthians 11:13; Galatians 1:7). In other words, Jesus predicts that, while the church will grow extremely large from just a small start, it will not remain pure.
