With most autobiographies, they start with where the person was born and what they have accomplished. James Baldwin was born in Harlem with terrible living conditions, but he made it easier to live in by reading books and writing. Eventually, Baldwin became so good that he received a lot of awards for his writing. Due to the fact that Baldwin did not have approval from his father to become a writer, he became a preacher instead like his dad wanted him to be. He eventually quit being a preacher and left home. Baldwin stated that he was happy that he can consider himself an African American. He likes it because being an African American writer is hard, but rewarding.
