Diving has been around for centuries; in fact in ancient times people use to hold their breath to search for food sources and even decorative items. Most people today relate diving to SCUBA (Self Contained Underwater Breathing) diving, but mostly as a recreational sport. Through technological advances the SCUBA world divers are able to explore the fascinating underwater world at greater depths and longer time intervals. These advances include the air lung, dive computers, and diving suits. With out these advances divers would not be able to explore great depths underwater safely. Issitt states, “Scuba diving requires certification through a licensed instructor or organization. Divers must learn to handle equipment to monitor oxygen levels, control depth and navigate underwater.” (Scuba Diving). Most diving instructors or organization have been certified through PADI (Professional Association of Divining Instructors), one of the most recognized organizations throughout the world as well as some of the following organizations: NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors), SSI (Scuba Schools International), NASE (National Academy of Scuba Divers), plus many more. Through these agencies one can safely be certified for Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver and lastly Master Diver. Each certification declares how safely one can dive to what depth, amount of time underwater, and what skills are appropriate for the dive being considered. “Open water diving is the most common type of scuba diving, and is the type covered by basic scuba diving certification. Open water diving is the type practiced most by enthusiasts of underwater nature photography and reef diving.” (Issitt, "Scuba Diving.") Not one dive is like another and every diver’s experience is different. No matter when a diver is certified, either in there twenties or in there sixties, a diver will never have the same experience diving. The vast underwater eco-system change daily.
