The House of Hades by Rick Riordan is a classic tale of good and evil. this book is the sequel to The Mark of Athena in the Heroes of Olympus series. Seven demigods are the main characters who set out to stop the evil Goddess Gaia from waking and destroying the world. The seven demigods are faced with both external and internal conflicts that help to shape the characters and the book. In The House of Hades, there are many underlying conflicts, but they are all directly caused by one person, Gaia. One that Percy and Annabeth are stuck in the underworld and can’t get out. Also, the demigods are trying to close the doors of death, but this is made harder because they don’t want to leave Percy and Annabeth in the underworld. The reason they need to close the door is because Gaia has been sending monsters out of Tartarus to stop the demigod from perusing their quest to save the world. This makes it hard to identify just one internal conflict because it each character has their own internal struggles. So to focus this paper I will focus on my favorite character Hazel Levesque. Hazel has a boyfriend named Frank who is an demigod on the ship with her. However, she is from the past, and she liked Sammy, who is the grandfather of Leo, who is also on the ship. In the previous book, this wasn’t a problem, but she sees traits in Leo that remind her of Sammy. This causes hazel to become torn between two people, Frank and Leo. This is a character versus self-conflict. Just like Hazel, at some point, we all have to make a decision between two things. They might not be about love, but usually, they will be important. Ranging from racism to loneliness, the characters in this novel have gone through a lot, physically and mentally. As the novel progresses all the characters seem to go from a negative, depressed mental state to a positive and loving one. Jefferson dies with courage because Grant was able to crack Jefferson and help him, which also ended up helping himself. Miss Emma and Tante Lou are now at peace thanks to Grant’s affect on Jefferson. The only reason the novel ended with everybody in a positive state of mind is due the decisions and actions made because of the internal conflict. In conclusion, internal conflicts are very important to the story causing conflicts and plot twists to interest the reader and pull the novel together.
Dante’s Inferno is a narrative poem, with a very complicated rhyme scheme, originally written in Italian. It documents the author’s, Dante, trip through hell, where he learns how hell is organized and the way in which sinners are punished. Dante is guided by the great poet Virgil, who leads him throughout hell. The Odyssey, is an epic authored by the Greek, Homer. The epics centers on Odysseus’ protracted journey home. The protagonist, Odysseus, visits the underworld for a very short amount of time. The two literary works contain many common elements, such as characters being punished, the protagonists interacting with those in the underworld, repeating characters, and the misery of the underworlds. There are also differences between the two works including the types of interactions between the protagonists and those they encounter, the reasons for each protagonists visit to the underworlds, and how the underworld operates. These differences and similarities can be attributed the Dante’s and Homer’s religion, the time period and culture in which they wrote their respective works, and the purpose for the visits to the underworlds in each work. Although there are many similarities between the underworlds in Dante’s Inferno and The Odyssey, the two works ultimately offer two different visions of the underworld due to the authors’ different religious beliefs and culture, as well as the role of the underworld in each literary work.
The primary ruling god of the underworld is Hades, whose brother is Zeus, king of the gods, and whose parents are Cronus and Rhea. Hades is a greedy god with his greatest concern being to increase the number of his subjects. He is very stubborn about letting people out of the underworld. Hades himself, rarely leaves the underworld. In one myth, however, we know of a time when he did leave his soulful domain.
