Fishing Tips

This is a list of things that I have learns over the years fishing on sportfishing boats. Some of this may seem common knowledge if you’re an avid angler but if you newbie then this might be helpful. I’m sure this is not a complete list so if you have something to add feel free to send me an email so I can add it to the list.
1) Prepare for your trip
a) Before you head out make sure you have your fishing license. If you do not have one you pick one up at most tackle shop, Walmart, online or at the landings. Even though you can get a license at the landing I recommend picking one up before you hand so that you are not holding up the line.

b) If fishing in Mexico make sure you have your passport (if fishing within 12 miles of the coast in Mexico, but even if going offshore not a bad idea to have it, I
If you are going on a tuna trip you may need to put on new line if you are using mono. If using a braided line then you may need to add a new top shot to your main line.

f) Knowing how to tie your hooks or lures onto your fishing line can mean the difference between landing a fish and losing a fish. There are many resources on the internet to show you some good knots. I suggest you learn at least at least one very well. A few of the knots I recommend are “San Diego Jam”, “Palomar” both are very good strong knots. http://www.animatedknots.com/ is a great resource for learning knots.

2) Listen to Deckhands
If you are on a sportfishing boat listen to advise offered by the deckhands they will help you get fish. They are on water fishing on a daily basis and know what works and what doesn’t. If deckhands are suggesting size 2/0 hook don’t be that guy that decides to uses 4/0 hooks yeah you might still catch something on it but chances are you will not catch anything.
