In the short story, “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, individuality versus society is seen and is a conflict for everybody in the story. The meaning of individuality is when someone has his or her own opinion and it is their choice to make decisions. In a society it is different because you have your own opinion, but it is up to everyone in your society to make the decision rather than just one person. As seen in this short story, in this particular society there is a lottery where whoever draws a card with a black dot gets stoned to death. This may seem like a very outrageous tradition for a society to have, but it is the town’s decision to keep the tradition going rather than leaving it up to individuals to decide for themselves. However, if by chance it was up to one individual to make this decision, it would be unfair to everybody else in the society. It would make that one person, much like a dictator, by controlling everyones’ decisions and wants. Therefore, a society should find a balance between individuality and society. …show more content…

This organization causes harm to others because they go against immigrants, Catholics, Jews, and African Americans because of who they are and what they believe in. This organization has its own traditions and beliefs that cause harm to those specific people. The KKK organization is very cruel to these people and do things that are offensive to them. For example, the KKK has rallies, and even burns crosses, to offend these people just because they do not believe in these groups. This organization still is active today because of blind followers that still support this matter. It is quite hurtful for what they do and what they believe
