Technology has undoubtedly made a huge impact in our lives through several different aspects. From the laundry machine that washes our clothes, to the microwave that heats up our food, technology has allowed us to live an easier and better lifestyle. One area that the advancement of technology has really influenced is crime. As the demand of consumers increase, new products are released which many use to their advantage and can cause an increase in the amount of crime that occurs throughout the world but, more specifically the United States. On the other hand, the criminal justice system has noticed several issues that need to be addressed and release new inventions that in turn reduce crime in the targeted area of interest. We are eternally learning from other cultures and adapting and forging a new approach to better understand and reprimand offenders and make sure justice always prevails. We have seen history and technology alter and imperceptibly modify towards new cultures and an easier lifestyle.
To begin with, one of the biggest issues that is still present in today’s society and that the criminal justice system faces is DUI or Driving under the Influence. Drunk Driving is illegal in all 50 states but, each state has its own DUI laws. One device that has reduced the amount of drunk driving in the streets is the Ignition Interlock Device (IID). The Ignition Interlock Device is a mechanism that is installed in a vehicle to prevent the act of drinking and driving. The driver must blow into the device and the machine analyses the breath sample to detect the amount of alcohol in the driver’s body. In the final analysis, technology has made a huge impact in today’s modern era. Technological advancements have brought several innovations that have allowed us to live an easier lifestyle. One of the aspects that technology has greatly influenced is the criminal justice system. Not only has it been a great help for officers to help apprehend criminals, it has also made the community a safer environment to live in. On the other hand, the evolution of technology has opened a gateway for new types of crimes to be committed via the use of these high tech machinery’s. As time progresses the area of industrial science expands which can be beneficial for society but, at the same time can damage it.
The hypotheses for this program are: Is the ignition interlock program effective in reducing impaired driving recidivism? Does it have an impact on more serious, persistent impaired drivers? Finally, does the program continue to be effective even after the interlock device is removed? (Weinrath)

The first step in preventing DUIs is to prevent an intoxicated individual from driving. It is not always possible to prevent an individual from driving while intoxicated but various measures have been implemented to deter an individual who has been previously charged with a DUI to re-offend. The ignition interlock device is one such technology that is most widely used for deterring repeat DUI offenders. The ignition interlock device works by preventing the car from starting if the minimum BAC level in the breath of the driver is detected.
Technology has opened new encounters and opportunities for the criminal justice system. There are so many new practices of criminal activity, such as computer crimes. There are different types of computer crimes that many people become victims of every day. Computer crime is any crime that involves a computer and a network. The computer may have been used in the commission of a crime, or it may be the target ("Computer Crime: Chapter 2: What Are the Crimes?", n.d.). Crimes such as data diddling, pump and dump, social engineering and spoofing are computer crimes. Even though these crimes are difficult by privacy issues, the new technology has made investigations and prosecutions well organized and effective. Driving under the influence is one of the most common and dangerous situations in which anyone can be or be placed. Drinking and driving is a serious offence that can cause someone to be physically harm or even killed. Not only are you putting yourself at risk but you are also risking the lives of passengers in the car as well as any other car and occupants sharing the road with you. Punishing the unlawful, undesirable and deviant members of society is an aspect of criminal justice that has experienced a variety of transformations throughout history. Although the concept of retribution has remained a constant (the idea that the law breaker must somehow pay his/her debt to society), the methods used to enforce and achieve that retribution has changed a great deal. The growth and development of society, along with an underlying, perpetual fear of crime, are heavily linked to the use of vastly different forms of punishment that have ranged from public executions, forced labor, penal welfare and popular punitivism over the course of only a few hundred years. Crime constructs us as a society whilst society, simultaneously determines what is criminal. Since society is always changing, how we see crime and criminal behavior is changing, thus the way in which we punish those criminal behaviors changes.
Technology is unavoidable in our modern lifestyle. You wake up, you use technology; you use technology while cooking, while eating, while driving. While you’re lying in bed before you fall asleep, you use technology, technology wakes you up in the morning. Is all the technology around you good for you, or is it harmful to your health? Was our society healthier or safer before all the advancements? So many questions and concerns about all of the technology we crave, but there are very few people who know the answers. Technology affects all parts of human life. It can create jobs, motivate people to get active, and assist people in learning, but this does not balance out that there are dangers that follow the use of technology.
When looking at the immeasurable exponential growth of technology, we as humans often overlook the fact that, as technology changes, so do we. In fact, technology starts acting more like us every day. For example: We have robots capable of undergoing and understanding research, and although the “singularity,” a point in time at which technology becomes capable of incrementing its own intelligence (similarly to humans), hasn’t been reached yet, we can’t deny that the time is closing in. Conversely, human independence has been decreasing at a similar rate to that of which technology has been growing.
