Good morning/afternoon ladies and gentleman. The term journey can to some extent act as a metaphor. It’s a term that accurately depicts many concepts from all walks of life without becoming ambiguous. It can be represented by utilising the fundamental characteristics of the word ‘journey’ itself as a journey can be representative of a process, physical travel, or any undertaking involving a goal. So what does the term journey mean to you? To me “a journey is not a trip or a vacation but it is rather a process of self-discovery” (Louis Vuitton). This process of self-discovery makes a journey special. It becomes unique and exclusive to only you. I believe that the journeys we encounter play a decisive role in who we become. Writers use this universal theme in literature to evoke certain emotions from their target audience. They are able to do this by creating characters whose journeys we can relate to. Journeys can be classified as emotional, physical and spiritual and are prevalent in literature due to their ability to describe the evolution of a character. Mao’s Last Dancer directed by Bruce Beresford and The Kite Runner, written by Khaled Hosseini are texts that use the idea of journey and incorporate it into the characters Li Cunxin and Baba. The journeys of both these contrasting characters have significantly broadened my understanding of the term journey. The concept of journey is represented in both “The Conciliation” by Benjamin Duterrau and “The National Picture” by Geoff Parr. Both texts represent journey in a different way but still use a variety of techniques such as symbolisation, setting, mood and costume in order to convey this to the viewer. “The National Picture” also uses elements of “The Conciliation” in a way that conveys the concept of journey in the piece.
Both texts present varying ideas of journeys, as characters in both texts come to realisations about their true natures, reflect on their past choices and gain a deeper understanding into personal relationships. The human need to be relatable is unquenchable. We love to be able to see parts of ourselves in others, and to be able to feel like our idols are not untouchable. The Hero’s Journey format is one that can be found in almost any story, even in real life. Overall, it is the perfect recipe for keeping readers engrossed. Another place the journey has shown up is in Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand and Odyssey by Homer. These two stories—one a biography, the other, an epic poem—are so effective in their storytelling, it is easy to see how authors today continue to use the same method to make stories that grab the readers’ attention. What makes them most alike, however, is the emotions and thoughts they have the power to provoke.
The hero’s journey is a useful tool in analyzing narratives of all kinds, from myths to movies to everyday life. One of the most iconic stages in the Hero’s Journey is the ordeal, otherwise known as the belly of the whale or the cave, in which the protagonist has reached their darkest and most hopeless point – things cannot get worse. Once the hero gets through the main ordeal, their journey home is much more sedated. This can be paralleled to the encompassing plot structure, in which there is a climax, and then the intensity of the story winds down again. At some point in every one’s life they go on a journey, whether it be a journey that circumferences the entire world or a journey of solely self-exploration. Either way a crucial part of life is going on a journey and finding out the type of person you are. Journeys are important for people because journeymen almost never end their journey the same way they started them. This is true for both Gilgamesh in The Epic of Gilgamesh and Candide in Candide. Both characters went on grand, strenuous and extensive journeys and both of them found out more about the world but more importantly more about themselves.
The second concept of the Hero’s journey shows us that all stories are the same. They all follow the same pattern or algorithm of separation, initiation, and return. An example from the movie is the Wizard of Oz where Dorothy is removed from her natural environment by a tornado, initiated with a lion, scarecrow, and tin man, and the group embarks on a journey to see the wizard. In the end, she is able to return home by clicking her heels. She realizes she has had the ability the whole time, but she needed to test herself. We are just like the characters we see in our favoritie movies, books, and shows – they are a metaphor for us as normal human beings. The last concept I learned is “Follow your bliss”. This concept of bliss is defined in many ways. One definition is serenity. Another definition is the thing you cannot not do. It is what makes a person feel alive. In order to answer the question of what is your bliss, you must ask yourself difficult questions like: What am I passionate about? What makes hours seem like minutes? The archetypal stages in books have been used since the works and discoveries of psychologist, like Carl Jung. Carl Jung saw archetypal stages as recurring images or patterns of situations that come from the unconscious mind. Whereas, Joseph Campbell, a mythologist who wrote a book The Hero of a Thousand Faces, a book about hero’s journeys, demonstrated how characters in books go through a series of stages in order to get to their final destination. In the novels, Jane Eyre and Their Eyes Were Watching God, the main characters all went through their own archetypal stages to get to their final journey to realize or discover their true destiny. Both of the main characters in these novels went through the four stages of the archetypal journey.

This journey involves a separation from the unknown, known world, and a series of phases the hero must go through . Each stage of the journey must be passed successfully if the person is to become a hero. In “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini, the main character Amir faces a series of trials and goes through obstacles where the concept of his childhood dies.
For anyone, there are time when things are going to change whether the change is planned or not. For military families change and loss often are not planned, and they have no choice in the matter. For any one person or family to move through change or loss it is important to go through the steps of transition, also know by Hall (2008) as the transition journey. The three phases of the transition journey that have their own focus and tasks are endings, neutral zone, and new beginnings (Hall, 2008). Not everyone follows the transition journey exactly, but this is a good example and tool to help individuals and families through the process. The three phases of the transition journey are going to be explained in further detail in this paper.
A physical journey occurs as a direct result of travelling from one place to another over land, sea or even space. The physical journey can occur individually or collectively, but always involves more than mere movement. Instead physical journeys are accompanied by inner growth and development, catalysed by the experiences and the decisions that impact the outcome of the journey. The journey’s that have been endured in this story are very great and important. These three types of journeys are ones that can be and are experienced in everyday life. The physical journey on the Pequod shows the hardships and dangers in life, the spiritual journey of Ahab can be related to the motives of others in life weather it is obsessive or unselfish, and then life’s journey which is what you yourself makes your life out to be.

There is nothing quite like traveling, going someplace new and finding out more about the world and yourself. Anyone can become a traveler it just takes a little bit of faith and courage. Traveling across the world or even across the country is a learning experience. When you are a traveler you see how people live and how different cultures work. It is the best educational experience you could give yourself. You see how the world works in a way no one can teach you. Seeing different cultures and people help build the person you want to be. If you are a traveler the world influences you, because when traveling, you see the good and the bad, and you learn from the right and the wrong. The world is a magnificent place that’s full of life and new places. Places that are waiting to be walked upon and viewed by the eye’s of travelers. To make new memories and go places that is beyond the walls of reality and new pathways of life. To truly experience the wonders that the world has to offer can be expressed by the life of one single person, setting off into the world to gain a higher purpose about the world. Traveling individually enables people to broaden their minds and accumulate new ideas and new experiences both nationally and internationally. By setting off into the world a person has the ability to learn so many new things, but also find so much about themselves while in the process of traveling.
